Tue Aug 14 2012 | 10:15 | Ben Wallace wants to return next season |
Unrestricted FA Ben Wallace wants to return for a 17th NBA season. |
Wallace previously said that he'd either return to the Pistons or retire, but Detroit's roster is full and the club would have to make a trade to bring back Wallace. The Detroit News speculates that Charlie Villanueva or Austin Daye would have to be traded for Wallace to be re-signed, but we can't imagine there is much of a trade market for Villanueva and his gruesome contract. As for Daye, he's certainly been underwhelming to date, but he'll be eligible for free agency next season so some team could choose to take a flier. |

There is a "pretty good" chance that Ben Wallace returns for another NBA season according to beat writer Vincent Goodwill. |
Wallace may do more to sell tickets and keep the peace in the locker room than anything else, but he should come cheap and for that reason it's a reasonable play by the Pistons. |

Ben Wallace (undisclosed) will be inactive for Monday's game against the Pacers. |
Wallace isn't known to be injured, so this is likely a case of the Pistons wanting to get a look at Vernon Macklin. The second-round rookie will back up Greg Monroe at center. |

Big Ben has been reduced to a bit player whose primary value is leading by example both on and off the court (recent DUI and gun charges notwithstanding, of course). He's still unsure whether he'll retire after this season. |

Ben Wallace has replaced Jonas Jerebko in the Pistons' starting five. |
It sounds like coach Lawrence Frank actually wants to roll with the 37-year-old Wallace as a starter going forward. The plan is to play Big Ben the first six minutes of each half and then spot him a few minutes in the second and fourth quarters. The chances of Wallace staying healthy or producing at reasonable levels are really slim. He hasn't played more than 28 minutes per game since the 2007-08 season. |

Sun Jan 8 2012 | 09:46 | Big Ben says he'll retire next summer |
Ben Wallace recently told Chris Mannix of SI.com that he will retire after this season. |
Wallace is 37 years old and has a diminishing role on the quasi-rebuilding Pistons, and he's been considering retirement for a while now. He is a four-time Defensive Player of the Year whose relentless energy enabled him to average 13.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game in the 2001-02 season (to go along with his usual 42% FT shooting). |

Ben Wallace feels that he played too many "consecutive minutes" last season, and that he cooled off by resting for too long. |

Both charges are misdemeanors that carry a maximum jail sentence of up to 93 days, and given Wallace's cooperation and clean record, it doesn't sound like he'll see any jail time. However, his fantasy value was already on the ropes, and this might have been a knockout blow. |
