Kelley allowed three runs, two earned, with two walks and a strikeout over 1.1 innings to take the loss Monday against the Dodgers.

He ran into trouble in the eighth, however, walking the leadoff batter and then committing an error, which allowed Jimmy Rollins to come to the plate with two men on. Rollins homered to right to give the Dodgers the lead. Kelley was the third reliever to appear after Nick Vincent and Frank Garces.

Kelley and the Padres agreed to a one-year, $2.835 million contract to avoid arbitration, his agent announced.
Kelley is poised to occupy a spot in the back end of the Padres' bullpen. Even though his 4.53 ERA last season wasn't impressive, his 3.02 FIP indicates he was the victim of some brutal luck and could be a pleasant surprise for the Padres. After 2015, the 30-year-old will be a free agent.

He will likely serve in a middle relief role for the Padres in 2014, but could also earn some late-inning appearances with a strong spring training.
