Fri Jun 3 201601:16Orioles' Wright heads to minors to work on command
BALTIMORE -- Before the Thursday game against the Boston Red Sox, the Baltimore Orioles optioned right-hander Mike Wright to the minors. It is part of the learning experience that young pitchers sometimes go through. There is no question that Wright has major league stuff. He can throw a fastball in the high 90 mph range along with a nasty slider. However, command is a big problem. Wright was too wild too often, especially in the strike zone -- and now he will work on his craft at Triple-A Norfolk.Wright heads down with a 2-3 record with a 5.88 ERA in 10 games, nine starts, after really struggling in recent starts. His latest, a no-decision Wednesday in the Orioles' 13-9 victory over the Boston Red Sox, saw the right-hander allow four homers in just 2 2/3 innings and six runs overall.Wright knows he has things to fix, and manager Buck Showalter remains confident that Wright be an effective major league starting pitcher but said his command must improve."He's trying to go two balls off the... RHP Mike Wright's early-season struggles continued in Wednesday's game vs. the Red Sox. He allowed four homers and six runs on seven hits in just 2 2/3 innings. Wright's got a strong fastball and can mix in some good off-speed stuff but keeps running into trouble in different ways and hasn't given the Orioles what they've hoped for from him. "I'm pitching in the best league in baseball right now and I'm leaving pitches up," Wright said. "So (four homers and six runs) was the result."

RHP Mike Wright got a no-decision after giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits in 5 1/3 innings Friday night against the Angels, the Orioles eventually winning the game 9-4. "My slider was bad in the bullpen and it was bad in the game," Wright said. "But I kept throwing it figuring it was going to come. My fastball's my pitch and it was getting me ground balls, so I should have stuck with it. It's part of the game, part of learning."

RHP Mike Wright didn't have the best stuff in his season debut Tuesday, but he didn't let the bad pitches pile up. Wright (1-0) allowed four runs, five hits and a walk while striking out four in five innings. "I was proud of Mike," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "He kept himself under control emotionally, and I'm not going to say he made the pitches when he had to. He just seemed to stay engaged in the moment and didn't let anything snowball, and our guys got us back in the ballgame." Wright was 0-5 over his last six starts.

RHP Mike Wright missed his season debut April 9 against Tampa Bay because the game was postponed. "Don't want to let Mike sit around too long," Showalter said. "Give him a chance to clear a little bit and get back out there Tuesday." After a solid spring training, he earned the No. 4 spot in the rotation to open the season. Wright made nine starts for Baltimore last season, going 3-5 with a 6.04 ERA with 26 strikeouts and 18 walks.

He was actually in line for a loss before the Orioles exploded for 12 runs over the last three innings to take him off the hook. He may continue to get regular turns, but is not likely to be of any help to fantasy teams down the stretch.
