ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves called up top prospect Ian Anderson to make his big league debut Tuesday night against Gerrit Cole and the New York Yankees. Tue Aug 4 202009:38Done for the year: Braves ace Soroka felled by torn Achilles
ATLANTA (AP) — When Mike Soroka's teammates heard him scream, they feared the worst. When they saw him being helped off the field, unable to put any weight on his right leg, they knew it was bad.“If Mike Soroka can't walk off the field, you know it's pretty serious,” said Freddie Freeman, the Atlanta Braves' slugging first baseman. One of baseball's brightest young pitching stars, Soroka is done for the year after tearing his right Achilles tendon during a seemingly routine play Monday night against the New York Mets.On a grounder to Freeman's right, Soroka broke toward first to cover the bag.He made it only one step.Soroka tumbled to the ground in serious pain, got up for a few tentative steps, then dropped to his knees on the infield grass."I heard him yell,” Freeman said. “It’s just a terrible injury for somebody so young, so bright, so determined to be great at this game.”The loss of Soroka is certainly a huge blow to the two-time reigning NL East champions, who already were struggling... Mon Aug 3 202023:58Braves ace Mike Soroka out for year with torn Achilles
ATLANTA (AP) — The two-time defending NL East champion Atlanta Braves took a huge blow when young pitching star Mike Soroka was lost for the season Monday night after tearing his right Achilles tendon against the New York Mets.Soroka was hurt in the third inning after delivering a pitch to J.D. Davis, who grounded the ball toward first baseman Freddie Freeman. After completing his follow-through, Soroka broke toward first to cover the bag — only to go down on his first step off the mound. The right-hander let out a scream and appeared to know right away it was a devastating injury, one that ensures he won't be back on the mound until 2021. “There's no sugarcoating it,” Freeman said. “It's just a terrible injury for somebody so young, so bright, so determined to be great at this game.”Soroka tried to walk gingerly for a couple of steps before dropping to his knees. He couldn’t put any weight on the leg as he was helped toward the clubhouse with the assistance of a trainer and manager Brian... [More]

Fried (1-0) struck out seven and walked one while allowing one run in 6 2/3 innings. The left-hander improved to 4-0 in four interleague starts.“I wouldn’t say it was anything out of the ordinary that felt like anything extra special,” Fried said after lowering his ERA to 2.31 in two starts. It looked special to Snitker.“He’s just growing as a pitcher,” Snitker said. “He was efficient. You could tell he was locked in too. He was really focused. It was fun to sit and watch him.”Luke Jackson, and Shane Greene combined for four outs before Mark Melancon pitched the ninth for his second save.Left fielder Adam... [More]

Tue Jul 28 202018:15Sign of times: Braves quickly run out of patience with Folty
ATLANTA (AP) — Call it a sign of the times.Facing a sprint of a season rather than a marathon because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Atlanta Braves didn’t have time to let Mike Foltynewicz sort out his perplexing problems. So, after a dismal showing in his first outing of an abbreviated campaign, the Braves cut ties with a 28-year-old pitcher who was an All-Star in 2018 and started two games in the NL Division Series last season. It was a stunning turn for a right-hander just entering what should be the prime of his career, who has no apparent injury issues and isn’t eligible for free agency until 2022.The Braves designated Foltynewicz for assignment after a 14-5 loss at Tampa Bay on Monday night, a move that effectively ended his tenure with a team that once viewed him as its staff ace. The move came after Foltynewicz surrendered six runs, three homers and four walks in 3 1/3 innings.“He's been a stuff guy the entire time we've had him,” manager Brian Snitker said. “But his stuff hasn’t...
