Torres mopped up in the Mets' 8-1 loss to the Pirates on Sunday, allowing two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings.

Torres has mainly become a sixth inning or mop up reliever after being heavily utilized by Terry Collins the past few seasons. Sunday was the third straight day he worked, though his innings will be way down from last year when he threw 97, as he sits at 47 right now.

Torres picked up the win Sunday, striking out three and giving up one hit in two innings of work agains the Cardinals.

Pitching the 17th and 18th innings of the Mets' marathon game against the Cardinals, Torres didn't face too much adversity to grab his third win of the season. After giving up a home run on Saturday, Torres was able to effectively bounce-back on Sunday and lowered his ERA back down to 4.17.

The Mets opted to send down Sean Gilmartin to make room for Jenrry Mejia rather than expose Torres, who has no more options remaining, to waivers.

Torres, who threw a scoreless inning Tuesday, has struggled this season, posting a 4.36 ERA. The big difference from this year to last is that lefties are hitting .318 against him as compared to just .218 a year ago. The return of Mejia and Bobby Parnell pushes Torres back to a middle-relief role.

Torres blew the save and then the game, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk in an inning-plus Wednesday. Despite that, he still should continue to pitch in high leverage situations.

Torres retired the first hitter in the eighth but then surrendered a single and threw a key wild pitch, moving Addison Russell to second base. Dexter Fowler's single then drove Russell in. In the ninth, he allowed two singles and then intentionally walked Miguel Montero with runners at the corner. Jeurys Familia was able to strike out Jorge Soler but walked Chris Coghlan to allow the winning run to score. With Familia closing and Jenrry Mejia (suspension), Bobby Parnell (elbow/forearm) and Vic Black (neck) out, manager Terry Collins is mixing and matching from innings six to eight, so Torres will likely still be used in key situations.

Torres, who pitched in 73 games last year, has appeared in 12 of the Mets' first 27 games this season.

Torres in on pace to match his usage of a year ago but his innings are way down in comparison. Last year, Torres pitched 97 innings, this year, he has thrown just 10, as manager Terry Collins has used him for less than an inning in six of his 12 appearance. That is a function of the Mets' solid rotation, since Torres has not been needed for multiple innings, as he was a year ago.

Torres worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the seventh preserving the Mets' 1-0 lead and Jacob deGrom's win in the team's 2-0 victory over the Phillies on Monday.

The hold was Torres' third of the season. He is filling a bigger role than usual with Vic Black (shoulder), Bobby Parnell (elbow) and Jenrry Mejia (suspension) out. When Black and Parnell return, Torres will be used in long relief and anywhere from the fifth to seventh innings.

Torres tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball Wednesday, giving him a career-high of 86.2 innings pitched.

Torres has pitched in 86 games, notching a 3.22 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 91:33 K:BB ratio. While his K rate has spiked from 7.82K/9 to 9.45K/9, it has come with a rise in his walk rate from 1.77 to 4.41BB/9, which has been a big reason why his WHIP has gone from 1.13 to 1.34. Torres has a rubber arm, enabling manager Terry Collins to use several days a week for multiple innings at a clip, if necessary.

Torres will start Monday against the Cubs with Bartolo Colon scratched to attend to his ill mother.

Torres started nine games last season, so he's not entirely a fish out of water here. However, he hasn't started a game this season and thus isn't stretched out, so this will likely be an abbreviated start.

Torres allowed two runs Sunday and has been scored upon in three of his last five outings.

Torres has seen heavy usage at times lately, including throwing three innings July 26 and 4.2 innings July 4. He has been given some time off following those extended outings, but the 66.1 innings he has thrown and 48 appearances to date maybe catching up with him.

He just has a bruise and is being listed as day-to-day. Torres earned the win in relief Monday against the Braves with two shutout innings.
