Thu Jul 4 201923:57Rangers top Angels in finale Skaggs would've started for LA
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Lance Lynn matched the major league lead with his 11th win and the Texas Rangers avoided a series sweep with a 9-3 victory over the grieving Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night, the Fourth of July game that the late Tyler Skaggs had been scheduled to start. The Angels won the first two games of the series after the 27-year-old Skaggs was found dead in his hotel room in Texas on Monday, and that night's scheduled game was postponed until August.Mike Trout hit another impressive homer for Los Angeles in the first inning, his AL best-tying 25th. But Lynn (11-4) limited Los Angeles to only one more run over his seven innings and Rougned Odor homered twice to drive in five runs for the Rangers, who snapped a four-game losing streak. An emotional trip for the Angels that began with them traveling to Texas in cowboy hats and Western attire — a theme initiated by Skaggs — now takes them to Houston for three games this weekend against the Astros before the All-Star break.... Mon Mar 4 201918:39Fulmer feeling healthy, hopes to rebound from tough 2018
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — When Michael Fulmer arrived in the major leagues in 2016, his impact was impressive and immediate. Now, the Detroit right-hander will settle for steady progress.Three years after that sparkling debut season, Fulmer is at a bit of a crossroads. He won AL Rookie of the Year honors in 2016 but has struggled to return to that form, especially last year, when he went 3-12 with a 4.69 ERA. His 2018 season ended a bit early because of knee problems, and Fulmer — who turns 26 this month — has been working on some mechanical adjustments in response to his injuries."I think last year, performance-wise, I wasn't a hundred percent all the way through the season, and I think it showed," he said Monday. "This year, we're trying to kind of redo everything and get to be pain free, which I am. I'm blessed for that, and I think everything else will kind of build up."Fulmer pitched three innings in Monday's 9-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Kolten Wong led off with a home run... Sun Mar 3 201916:58Unhurried starter Tanaka has no pitch-clock violations
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka got along just fine with baseball's new 20-second pitch clock in his first spring training start.Tanaka is one of the majors' slowest workers, but he didn't have any violations while working three scoreless innings in New York's 7-1 win over a Detroit Tigers split-squad on Sunday.Tanaka was ranked 76th out of 78 pitchers throwing 150 or more innings last year at 26.1 seconds between pitches, according to Fangraphs. He was ahead of only Houston's Justin Verlander (26.3) and Boston's David Price (26.7)."Yes, I was conscious of that," Tanaka said through a translator. "It's something MLB is testing during spring training and it might come into effect once we get into the season. You don't want to be not prepared if that were to happen."He had 19 of his 40 pitches subjected to the clock rules and saw it hit three seconds left against Christin Stewart with a runner on third and one out in the first.Eight times, including four and five seconds... Tue Jul 31 201802:54Miguel Cabrera trying to stay upbeat about recovery
DETROIT (AP) — Miguel Cabrera can now say it with a good deal of certainty: Baseball is harder than it looks on TV."It's so easy when you watch the game on TV. It's so slow," the Detroit slugger said. "The game is so simple on TV."It's not nearly as simple on the field, of course, and right now all Cabrera can do is watch. The Tigers lost their star first baseman in the middle of June to a ruptured biceps tendon, and he's out for the season. Detroit was in a rebuilding mode anyway, but losing one of the team's top hitters was a significant blow.Cabrera was back at Comerica Park on Monday night to host an event supporting children's health and youth baseball programs. He seemed to be feeling good, but he has a long way to go before playing again."Right now it's a little slow," Cabrera said. "Hopefully in a couple weeks I starting do more stuff, to be healthy again."Cabrera said he goes back and forth between Michigan and Florida, and he thinks he's making good progress toward being ready... DETROIT (AP) — Boston Red Sox second baseman Brock Holt left Friday night's game at Detroit in the fourth inning with what appeared to be a right knee injury.Holt stayed on the ground for a while at the end of a wild play. He appeared to be hurt when the Tigers' Jeimer Candelario slid safely back into second. Holt was eventually able to get up and walk off the field. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Detroit's John Hicks hit a shallow fly to left, and Andrew Benintendi made the catch. His throw home was wild, but Niko Goodrum of the Tigers stayed at third. Candelario took off from second toward third, and then had to go back when he realized Goodrum was still there. The throw went back to second, and Candelario slid in safely.___More AP baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball
