Verrett was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill in for Jon Niese, who hit the paternity list.

Niese will only be on the paternity list for three days at most, so Verrett's stay is likely to be short unless the Mets choose to send someone else down. The 25-year-old impressed in his last stint with New York, allowing only one earned run in 12.1 innings.

Verrett was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.

He has a 0.73 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 12.1 innings, but was optioned to make room for Jenrry Mejia, who was reinstated as a corresponding move. Still, given Verrett's success in his brief time with the Mets, it would seem that he will get another chance to pitch out of the big league bullpen later this season.

Verrett tossed three scoreless innings to notch his first save in the Mets 8-0 win over the Dodgers on Sunday.

Verrett, who was selected by the Rangers from the Mets in the rule 5 draft, has pitched well since rejoining the organization. He went 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 11 appearances and 30 innings for Triple-A Las Vegas. Verrett now has allowed just one earned run in 12.1 innings over six appearances with the Mets.

Verrett was called up to the Mets Wednesday, Matt Ehalt of The Record reports.

Verrett returned to the Mets in May after being released by the Rangers in April. He went 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 11 appearances and 30 innings for Triple-A Las Vegas.

Verrett was returned to the Mets on Monday and will play for Triple-A Las Vegas, Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal reports.

Verrett was originally selected by the Orioles as part of the Rule 5 draft in the offseason, but failed to make the Orioles club out of camp. He was then claimed by the Ranger to begin the season, but his underwhelming stat line to begin the season led to his designation for assignment Friday. He went unclaimed the second time around, and he'll now return to the Mets' minor league system.

Verrett threw the ball well this spring, giving up just three earned runs in 14 innings (1.93 ERA), so the Rangers decided to snap him up off waivers. Verrett was selectedin December's Rule 5 draft, so if the Rangers remove him from their active roster at any point, he will have to be offered back to his original team -- the Mets -- if he clears waivers.

Manager Buck Showalter says the Orioles are looking to find a way to keep Verrett on the roster when the season begins, according to MASN Sports reports.

Verrett has been competing against a bevy of players in the bullpen, some of whom are out of options, as well as fellow Rule 5 pick Jason Garcia. But Verrett has been very impressive, allowing two runs on eight hits with 12 strikeouts and no walks in 12.1 innings. The Orioles have used him as a spring training closer and he converted two of three opportunities. Given that Verrett has Triple-A experience and Garcia would have to jump multiple levels, Verrett seems like he might have an edge over Garcia. Perhaps the Orioles will trade or release another member of the bullpen to be able to keep Verrett.
