Wed Aug 18 202123:29Jesus Luzardo Struggles Again On Wednesday Night
Miami Marlin starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo struggled again in Wednesday's start against the Atlanta Braves. Luzardo went just three innings, allowing four runs on four hits and five walks, striking out four. The lefty threw 74 pitches, only 42 strikes. He clearly has excellent stuff, but if he can't throw strikes, it won't matter. Luzardo has time to continue developing at the big league level in a lost season for the Marlins.

Sat Aug 14 202102:11Jesus Luzardo Allows Five Runs But Gets A Win
Miami Marlins rookie starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo wasn't particularly good in Friday's start against the Chicago Cubs, but he didn't need to be, as the Marlins offense put up 14 runs. Luzardo earned a win despite allowing five runs on six hits and four walks in five innings of work. He struck out six but gave up two home runs. Luzardo has shown some flashes of brilliance and seems to have an elite curveball already. If his other pitches can catch up to his curve, he has ace upside. For now, he's 4-5 with a 7.52 ERA. Far from an ace.

Sun Aug 8 202101:54Jesus Luzardo Struggles On Saturday
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo struggled in his second Marlins start on Saturday against the Colorado Rockies. Luzardo lasted just 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits and four walks, striking out just two. Luzardo clearly has electric stuff, but his control has been a huge issue, as too many of his pitches either miss the zone entirely or split the plate as far too hittable pitches. He now gets to work with the Marlins coaching staff, who have been excellent at developing pitchers. Luzardo's ceiling is sky high, but he's too much of a risk to be rostered in redraft leagues this season.

Tue Aug 3 202100:24Jesus Luzardo Earns A Win In His First Marlins Start
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo earned a win in his first start as a Marlin on Monday. Facing the New York Mets, Luzardo pitched five innings, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five. Luzardo struggled a little with his control, throwing 47 of his 84 pitches for strikes and missing his spots badly at times, but he showed his upside by looking nearly unhittable when throwing strikes. Luzardo will likely spend the rest of the season in the starting rotation, but his fantasy value will come next season after he's had more of a chance to work with Marlins pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre, Jr. Luzardo should be rostered in all keeper and dynasty formats.

Tue Aug 3 202100:20Jesus Luzardo Earns Win In Marlins Debut
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo earned his third win of the season after going five innings against the New York Mets on Monday in his debut start for the club. The 23-year-old managed to strike out five and get through five innings, despite giving up four hits, walking three, and recording only 47 strikes on 84 pitches. These final two months of the season present a perfect change-of-scenery opportunity for Luzardo to regain his confidence after being traded for Oakland Athletics outfielder Starling Marte on July 28. Luzardo represents a buy-low option in dynasty formats, and warrants stash consideration in redraft leagues to see if he can string together a few solid starts. On the season, the left-hander is 3-4 with a 6.70 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, and 45 strikeouts over 43 innings. Luzardo's next start will come this weekend in Colorado versus the Rockies.

Mon Aug 2 202118:20Jesus Luzardo Starting Monday's Game
The Miami Marlins have called up rookie left-handed pitcher Jesus Luzardo, and he will start Monday's game against the New York Mets. Luzardo was acquired before the trade deadline in a one-for-one deal with the Oakland Athletics in exchange for outfielder Starling Marte. Luzardo was immediately optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville, but did not make an appearance there. He'll make his Marlins and National League debut in the series opener against the Mets. There is a ton of upside in Luzardo's left arm, but the small sample of his big league numbers shows that there may still be some work to be done. Luzardo should be rostered in all dynasty and keeper formats, but redraft managers may want to wait and see how the lefty does in his first start or two on his new team.

Wed Jul 28 202113:22Starling Marte Traded To Oakland, Jesus Luzardo To Miami
Miami Marlins outfielder Starling Marte has been traded to the Oakland Athletics, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network. In exchange, the Athletics have sent starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo to Miami. Marte has been having a bounce back year at the plate so far, slashing .306/.407/.453 with seven homers, 22 steals, 25 RBI and 52 runs scored over 63 games. Meanwhile, Luzardo was 2-4 this year for Oakland with a 6.87 ERA, 1.632 WHIP and 23.1 percent strikeout rate over 38 innings of work. Luzardo will be a reclamation project for Miami, as they hope to find the top prospect potential he had shown in the minors that had not yet appeared at the major league level. Meanwhile, Marte will see an uptick in value playing with a better Oakland offense, as he now rounds out an outfield that already includes Mark Canha and Ramon Laureano. Managers should try to acquire Marte now, as he should have better numbers in the second half of the season with Oakland.

Tue Sep 29 202018:48Giolito, White Sox beat A's 4-1 in wild-card round opener
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Lucas Giolito dazzled in his postseason debut, stymieing the Oakland Athletics through six perfect innings and sending the Chicago White Sox to a 4-1 victory in the opener of their best-of-three wild-card series Tuesday. Giolito (1-0), who pitched a no-hitter against Pittsburgh on Aug. 25, didn’t allow a baserunner to the AL West champions until Tommy La Stella’s single up the middle to start the seventh. Giolito gave up one run on two hits over seven innings, struck out eight and walked one before giving way to Evan Marshall after a stellar 100-pitch outing. Giolito got plenty of support: José Abreu hit a two-run homer and Adam Engel also connected for Chicago against Jesus Luzardo (0-1). Yasmani Grandal homered in the eighth. Alex Colome, Chicago’s third reliever, worked the ninth for a save in the 2-hour, 53-minute game. Now, Oakland must win Game 2 on Wednesday at home to avoid another early playoff exit. The A’s are in the postseason for a third straight year,... [More]
Mon Sep 28 202020:28LEADING OFF: Playoffs begin, Bieber vs Cole in prime matchup
A look at what's happening around the majors on Tuesday: MARQUEE MATCHUP Shane Bieber dominated this year for Cleveland, leading the American League in wins (8), ERA (1.63) and strikeouts (122). He didn’t allow a run in six of his 12 starts. Gerrit Cole delivered for the Yankees in his first season since signing a $324 million, nine-year contract, going 7-3 with a 2.84 ERA. Now they meet in the playoff opener at Progressive Field, a classic pitching duel in the making on the first day of the postseason. “We’re fired up,” Bieber said. “We think this is a good matchup.” For all Bieber and Cole have accomplished in the shortened regular season, it will mean little if they don’t perform well to start the best-of-three series. WE’RE PLAYING WHO? In a year where so much about baseball has looked different, this 16-team postseason has at least one throwback element. “It’s like the old days, man, when you played a team you’ve never played before. It’s exactly what it is,” said Sandy Alomar Jr.,... [More]
