Wed Aug 5 202023:28First-place Marlins sweep O's, move to 5-1 despite outbreak
BALTIMORE (AP) — Five pitchers combined on a four-hitter for Don Mattingly’s undermanned, gritty and first-place Miami Marlins, who beat the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 Wednesday night for a doubleheader sweep.Brian Anderson homered in opener, and Miami won 1-0 despite getting only two hits. The sweep kept the Marlins atop the NL East and earned Mattingly his 281st win as Miami’s manager, tying Jack McKeon’s club record. The Marlins won their third straight game since emerging from a coronavirus-prompted layoff that left them with a roster filled with callups, free agents and rookies. Miami has allowed a total of one run and 10 hits in those three games at Camden Yards. In the nightcap. Jon Berti hit an RBI double off Asher Wojciechowski (0-2) in the first inning and scored on a fly ball by Jesús Aguilar. That proved to be enough. Josh A. Smith started, Brian Moran (1-0) struck out three over one inning and Stephen Tarpley got four outs for his first save.In the opener, Anderson produced the game’s... [More]

Sat Mar 7 202018:00Miami's Mattingly unconcerned about Corey Dickerson's swing
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Miami manager Don Mattingly isn't concerned that free-agent acquisition Corey Dickerson's is currently flirting with .150.In fact, Mattingly's barely noticed.“Corey's a guy I haven't really paid, to be honest with you, a ton of attention to because I just know he's always hit,” Mattingly said.Dickerson appreciates the trust.“I told somebody, I don't even see him around,” Dickerson said, referring to Mattingly. “He has other things to watch, I'm sure. I take pride in my work. They know that, so they trust me to do my work.”An All-Star in 2017 with Tampa Bay, Dickerson signed a two-year, $17.5 million contract with Miami during the off-season.Capable of playing all three outfield positions, Dickerson will primarily play left. Mattingly has given Dickerson some innings in center this spring but doesn't plan to move him around during the season.“It's great to have versatility, but when you're moving all over the field it's not quite as easy as it sounds,” Mattingly said.... Sun Mar 1 202020:04Rangers' Kluber pitches for 1st time since broken arm
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Corey Kluber faced major league hitters for the first time in 10 months — in a new uniform, no less — and said he didn't feel any different. "Maybe a little bit beforehand," the Texas Rangers right-hander said Sunday after throwing three innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers. "But once you get out there and start stretching, playing catch, getting loose in the bullpen, all that stuff kinda goes away. "It just turns into another start, whether it's the regular season or spring training. That's kind of how everything usually goes for me."It was Kluber's first time facing a major league lineup since May 1 with Cleveland, when Miami's Brian Anderson hit a line drive off his pitching arm and broke it. Kluber then injured an oblique during a rehab assignment, which ended his season — and it turned out, his time with Cleveland. The Indians traded him to Texas this offseason. The cool-headed Kluber allowed two runs and two hits Sunday, including a home run to Enrique Hernandez.... [More]
Wed Feb 26 202020:05Kim works two perfect innings in debut as Cardinals starter
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Nervous or not, South Korean star Kwang Hyun Kim is proving problematic for major league hitters. The 31-year-old left-hander retired all six Miami batters he faced in his first Grapefruit League start for the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. It came after he threw one shutout inning of relief against the New York Mets on Saturday.“I was nervous today compared to my first appearance, against the Mets,” Kim said through an interpreter. "I had a long time to prepare, so that made me kind of nervous.”Kim struggled with control of his off-speed pitches in the first inning, but he found his rhythm in the second. He kept batters off balance mixing a fastball that touched 95 mph with his curve, eliciting some ugly swings and soft contact. The Marlins didn't get a ball out of the infield against Kim.“Last time against the Mets, because it was my first appearance, they tried to be patient,” Kim said. “Because I was aggressive today, pounding the strike zone, they were aggressive... Tue Feb 18 202013:09Versatile Villar to get tryout in center field with Marlins
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Versatile newcomer Jonathan Villar is expected to be an ironman in the Miami Marlins' lineup, even if they don’t know where.Villar played in all 162 games last year for the Baltimore Orioles, mostly at second base and shortstop. But the Marlins will give him a spring training tryout in center field because they have little experience there.“I’m coming here to help the team,” Villar said. “They want me to play center field, so I’ll try. If I can play another position I’ll do it.”Villar's seven-year career has included eight games in center field, most recently in 2017 with the Milwaukee Brewers. He has been mostly a middle infielder but has also played third base and left field.“We’re going to mess around with center field and see if that’s a position he can handle,” manager Don Mattingly said. “You look at Jonathan and really feel he’s the best athlete on the field. So we’re going to give it a shot. We think he fits there with our club and our pieces, and it would be... [More]
Mon Feb 17 202015:09Marlins believe they have 'a lot more talent' in 2020
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Even the Miami Marlins can be optimistic at the start of spring training, which is why president of baseball operations Michael Hill stood facing the practice fields before the first full-squad workout Monday and didn't flinch at what's to come.“This is a camp where there is as much talent as I've ever seen,” he said. That's only modest praise given that the Marlins have endured 10 consecutive losing seasons, all with Hill in the front office. After losing 105 times in 2019, they could be much improved and still finish last in the NL East. But the Marlins do believe they're finally on the upswing in Year 3 of the Derek Jeter regime.“It's time,” manager Don Mattingly said. “There’s a lot more talent; there’s a lot more veteran talent,” Hill said. “You can look at a deeper pitching staff, a better bullpen, a deeper lineup. The expectation to win more games comes with that.”Among those with loftier expectations is majority owner Bruce Sherman, part of Jeter's group that... [More]

Tue Dec 3 201915:50In wake of 2 deals, Marlins seek further upgrade for offense
MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Marlins will seek to add further pop to their lineup this offseason after acquiring slugging first baseman Jesús Aguilar and the versatile Jonathan Villar, who will be used primarily at third base and in the outfield.“We improved our offense, but we had a long way to go,” president of baseball operations Michael Hill said Tuesday. “So we’re still exploring opportunities to improve our offense.”The Marlins acquired Villar on Monday from the Baltimore Orioles for minor league left-hander Easton Lucas and claimed Aguilar off waivers after he was designated for assignment last week by the Tampa Bay Rays.Adding bats was the primary goal at the start of the offseason after the Marlins finished last in the National League in runs and homers. They also are shopping for bullpen help, including a closer. Starting pitching isn’t a priority because young arms are the organization’s strength.“We believe in the starting pitching depth we currently have,” Hill said. “We think this... [More]
Mon Sep 30 201912:23A decade of losing: Marlins begin another long offseason
MIAMI (AP) — Derek Jeter watched the first pitch on opening day from the owner's box next to the dugout, but within a few innings he retreated to a more secluded location and rarely returned to his field-level seat during the season.Alas, from whatever vantage point, Jeter's team looked bad.Even by the Miami Marlins' modest standards, their 10th consecutive losing season was especially unsightly. They exceeded 100 losses for the first time since 1998 and only the second time in franchise history, finishing 57-105 and 40 games out of first place in the NL East, which they've never won.Despite progress in the farm system that was much needed, at the big league level there was no sign of the turnaround Jeter has promised since his group bought the team two years ago."It has been frustrating, to say the least," Jeter said. "We don't want to have just the best minor league system; we want to have the best major league team. We still have a long way to go."Translation: Don't expect dramatic improvement... [More]
