CF Mike Trout is swinging a bat and hitting a ball off a tee as part of his rehab from a torn ligament in his left thumb. Manager Mike Scioscia said he thinks Trout is three weeks away from return, which would be after the All-Star break. Trout hoped to return before the break but Scioscia said, "We don't want him to skip any steps and try to do too much too soon."

SS Andrelton Simmons has set a career high for stolen bases with 13. The Angels lead the AL in steals. He did not get a chance to improve his steal numbers Tuesday, when he went 0-for-3.

RF Kole Calhoun is hitting .354 in his last 25 games with 22 RBIs. He went 0-for-4 on Tuesday.

C Martin Maldonado's home run Monday gave him eight on the season, tying his career high. He has hit three home runs in his last six games in addition to throwing out 38 percent of runners trying to steal on him. He went 0-for-3 Tuesday.

CF Cameron Maybin was not in the starting lineup Tuesday, manager Mike Scioscia deciding to give him a day off. Maybin has been a huge part of the Angels staying alive with Mike Trout sidelined by his torn thumb ligament. In his last 27 games, Maybin is hitting .345 with 34 runs scored, 17 extra base hits and 15 steals. The Angels are 17-11 in games he has led off and his 24 steals lead the American League.

SS Corey Seager missed his third straight game Tuesday with a right hamstring strain. "Corey ran today at 100 percent and took grounders," manager Dave Roberts said. "He probably could play but we just want to be cautious with him." In his last 13 games, Seager is hitting .426 with 13 runs scored, 14 RBIs and 10 steals.

RF Yasiel Puig had his one-game suspension for an indecent gesture he made at a game at Cleveland rescinded Tuesday. Major League Baseball accepted a Puig donation to a charity in place of a suspension.

3B Justin Turner is hitting .385 after a red-hot streak of 20 games that has seen him hit .438 with 17 runs scored, nine extra base hits and 13 RBIs. He had a day off Tuesday.

LHP Clayton Kershaw (11-2) will take his usual turn in the rotation Thursday on his usual rest. Manager Dave Roberts gave Kenta Maeda a spot start Tuesday so each of the five starters would get an extra day off, but Kershaw wanted to work on his usual schedule. Alex Wood's start was moved back a day behind Kershaw.

RHP Brad Peacock was reinstated from the paternity list. His wife, Stephanie, gave birth to their first child, Colton Joseph, on Saturday. Peacock takes the roster spot of RHP Jordan Jankowski, who was optioned to Triple-A Fresno on Sunday. Peacock is scheduled to start the series finale on Thursday.

SS Carlos Correa walked twice and added a single in the ninth inning Tuesday. He has reached base safely in 15 consecutive games dating back to June 10, tying the longest such streak in his career, accomplished May 3-20, 2016.

2B Jose Altuve recorded three hits Tuesday to increase his career total to 1,141. He moved into sole possession of ninth place on the franchise list, surpassing Bill Doran (1,139). Jimmy Wynn is eighth on the franchise list with 1,291 hits. Altuve is one multi-hit game behind Wynn for eighth in franchise history with 323.

RF George Springer hit his 23rd home run of the season in the ninth inning off Athletics RHP Liam Hendriks on Tuesday. His homer total prior to the All-Star Game break is the most by an Astros player since Lance Berkman socked 24 in 2006. Springer now ranks second in the American League in home runs behind Yankees RF Aaron Judge (26). His 23 homers batting leadoff ties the club record set by Craig Biggio in 2004.

1B Miguel Cabrera hit his ninth homer of the season on Tuesday, a three-run shot off Kansas City starter Matt Strahm. It landed in the right-field stands, his sixth opposite-field homer this season. Cabrera now has 26 career homers and 115 RBIs against the Royals. He hit in the cleanup spot for the first time this season, though it's uncertain if he'll stay there because of the imminent return of designated hitter Victor Martinez.

DH Victor Martinez is expected to be activated Wednesday. Martinez was placed on the 10-day disabled list June 16 with an irregular heartbeat. He has been doing cardio and hitting off a tee in the cage since he was cleared for baseball activities. He took batting practice on Tuesday after the team began a 10-game homestand. Manager Brad Ausmus wouldn't tip his hand whether Martinez, who is hitting .261 with five homers and 29 RBIs, would remain in the cleanup spot.

LHP Justin Wilson notched his seventh save with a clean ninth inning on Tuesday. Wilson recorded his last two outs against Kansas City on strikeouts. His punchout of Royals second baseman Whit Merrifield was the 300th of his career. He has recorded two straight saves after allowing runs in two of his previous three appearances.

CF Mikie Mahtook helped the Tigers offensively and defensively in a 5-3 win on Tuesday. He had two hits and scored a run and also made a spectacular leaping grab to rob Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez of an extra-base hit in the fifth inning. Mahtook has started mainly against left-handers but could see his role expand. "He's definitely given us better at-bats," manager Brad Ausmus said. "He's played well in center. He might get a few more looks against right-handed pitchers."

SS Alcides Escobar stretched his hitting streak to a season-high eight games on Tuesday. He smacked a pair of singles and is batting .379 during the streak. Escobar, the team's former leadoff batter who is now hitting in the No. 8 spot, has nudged his season average to .214. He has made a major-league-high 246 consecutive starts.

C Salvador Perez had some good fortune and some bad fortune at the plate on Tuesday. He blooped a two-run single off Detroit starter Justin Verlander in the first inning. He was also robbed of an extra-base hit in the fifth on a leaping grab by center fielder Mikie Mahtook, who held onto the ball after crashing into the wall. Perez has a .411 career average against Verlander, the highest of any opposing hitter against Detroit's ace with a minimum of 25 plate appearances.

RHP Jairo Diaz was demoted to Triple-A Albuquerque before Tuesday's game against the Giants to create a roster spot for the promotion of OF Mike Tauchman. Diaz pitched one inning in Monday's loss to the Giants, allowing three runs (two earned) and four hits. That was his lone major league outing of the year.
