Tue May 2 201705:55RHP Alec Asher makes second start on Tuesday night at Boston
RHP Alec Asher, who has only pitched three times this season, makes his second start on Tuesday night at Boston. He pitched well in his April 15 start against Toronto -- one run, three hits in 6 1/3 innings -- but he mostly has been watching since. "I'm happy to be with the club and winning games, and I'll do whatever they want me to do, as long as I stay here," he said Monday. "I've thrown a couple extra bullpens on the side to stay fresh, but I'm ready to go."

RHP Alec Asher was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk Saturday and pitched well in a no-decision. Asher one run, three hits and struck out five in 6 1/3 innings. Baltimore's schedule will prevent him from getting another start in the majors for the time being. The Orioles don't need a fifth starter until next Saturday against the Boston Red Sox and manager Buck Showalter said there a few arms down in the bullpen.

RHP Alec Asher will make his Orioles debut Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Asher was obtained in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies March 28 in exchange for a player to be named or cash. He pitched 4 1/3 runless innings for Triple-A Norfolk Monday in his season debut to set him up for the start in Toronto. The fact that he is a right-hander factored into the decision to pitch him against Toronto's predominantly right-handed hitting lineup. He has never faced Toronto.

RHP Alec Asher looks to continue his solid late-season work as a member of the Phillies' rotation Saturday night, when he takes the mound in the third contest of a four-game series against the New York Mets at Citi Field. Asher didn't factor into the decision in his most recent start last Sunday, when he gave up two runs on six hits and no walks while striking out four over 4 1/3 innings as the Phillies fell to the Miami Marlins 5-4. It was the shortest of the three starts Asher made for the Phillies since Sept. 8, when he was promoted from Triple-A Lehigh Valley for the first time this season. He is 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA after going 0-6 with a 9.31 ERA in seven stats last season. Asher had his worst outing as a big leaguer in his lone previous appearance against the Mets last Sept. 30, when he didn't factor into the decision after giving up five runs over a career-low two-thirds of an inning in the Phillies' 7-5 win.

RHP Alec Asher will start Thursday in place of RHP Vince Velasquez, who is being shut down due to an innings limit. Asher's 80-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs expired Tuesday. Asher, 24, has already overcome a lot. He had elbow surgery at age 14. He went to three high schools in three years and was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 23rd round in 2010. He agreed to an $80,000 bonus, but the Giants backed out when it was discovered he had bone spurs. He went to a junior college and worked his way back only to get suspended this past June 16. A 6-4, 230-pounder, Asher was 0-6 with a 9.31 ERA in seven starts this year with the Phillies.

RHP Alec Asher completed the 80-game suspension he received after testing positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone, and he began a rehab assignment Tuesday with the Phillies' affiliate in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League. He gave up one unearned run in one inning. Asher was at Triple-A Lehigh Valley with a stress fracture in his leg when he received the suspension. He went 0-6 with a 9.31 ERA in seven starts with Philadelphia in 2015. His 2016 efforts include stops between Double-A Reading and Lehigh Valley.

RHP Alec Asher, currently on the disabled list at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, was suspended 80 games for violating Major League Baseball's drug agreement following a positive test for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone, an anabolic steroid used to increase speed and strength. It is the same substance that earned Phillies LHP Daniel Stumpf an 80-game suspension in April. Manager Pete Mackanin called Asher's suspension "surprising" and "disappointing," and seemed at a loss to sort it out, much less the one involving Stumpf. "They can't explain it," Mackanin said. "Taking some kind of medication for whatever. Didn't know what was in it. Supplements. I didn't query these guys on it. Like when Stumpf was told, I didn't ask him how you could have possibly done it. I didn't want to go there." Asher, acquired from Texas in the Cole Hamels trade last July, was 0-6 with a 9.31 in seven starts with the Phillies in 2015, and 4-2 with a 2.30 ERA while splitting eight starts between Double-A and Triple-A this season.

Asher (0-6) lasted just two innings Saturday, giving up three earned runs on six hits while walking none and striking out one in a 5-2 loss to the Marlins.
Asher threw just 43 pitches in his Sept. 30 shellacking against the Mets, allowing him to start against Miami on short rest. The outing may have been ill-advised, as Asher was pummeled in his two innings, lasting just 44 pitches in game two of the doubleheader. The 23-year-old posted a 4.73 ERA in Triple-A Round Rock while still in the Rangers organization -- perhaps an indication that Asher is not ready to face big league hitting.

Asher will start the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Marlins, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Asher just pitched Wednesday, but threw only 43 pitches before being pulled. He will likely only throw a few innings Saturday before the Phils turn the game over to their pen.

Asher didn't get out of the first inning Wednesday against the Mets, giving up a three-run homer followed by a two-run homer while recording two outs.
Fortunately, he managed to avoid taking his sixth loss in six MLB starts thanks to a comeback by the Phillies' offense, with some major help from the Mets' bullpen. His season is likely over, which means he'll finish with an even 9.00 ERA -- 27 runs, all earned, in 27 innings.
