Wed Mar 29 202318:09Mets Not Naming David Robertson The Go-To Closer
The New York Mets are not naming a closer in Edwin Diaz's (knee) absence to open the 2023 regular season. Manager Buck Showalter said he can see one pitcher getting the bulk of the save chances, and "obviously David Robertson has probably the strongest background" with 157 career saves. However, Adam Ottavino, Brooks Raley and even Drew Smith could also see time pitching in the ninth inning for the Mets this year. The best bet for saves in this bullpen is clearly Robertson, given his experience, with Ottavino and Raley serving as high-leverage setup men. The 37-year-old Robertson was solid last year for the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies, and his fantasy stock went way up when we learned that Diaz would likely miss all of 2023 due to his knee injury.

Tue Mar 21 202312:37David Robertson Likely To Be Mets Closer
With New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz (knee) likely to miss all of the 2023 season, reliever David Robertson will likely serve as the fill-in closer this year. It's also possible that the Mets look to trade for another closer-worthy reliever, but big trades are rare this time of year and the Mets guard their prospects like gold -- they do not want to trade Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty or Ronny Mauricio. The New York Post's Jon Heyman thinks a trade for Diaz's brother, Cincinnati Reds reliever Alexis Diaz makes a lot of sense. The Mets' current plan seems to be to hope that Robertson, who has 157 career saves, can step up and be the guy. Left-hander Brooks Raley could be another option, but for those looking for saves in fantasy drafts, Robertson is your best bet.

Thu Mar 16 202311:26David Robertson, Brooks Raley Could Be In Mix For Saves
With New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz (knee) potentially suffering a season-ending right knee injury in the World Baseball Classic on Wednesday night, relievers David Robertson and Brooks Raley will likely become the team's primary options in save situations. Raley returned from the WBC with a hamstring injury, but the Mets expect him to be ready for Opening Day or shortly thereafter. New York could also choose to sign another left-hander such as Zack Britton after scouting him in February. Robertson saved 20 games for the Cubs and Phillies last year and has 157 career saves over 14 big-league seasons, so he seems like the logical favorite for the majority of save chances if Diaz is out for a significant period of time.

Thu Dec 8 202221:18David Robertson Joins Mets Bullpen
The New York Mets agreed with relief pitcher David Robertson on a one-year, $10 million deal on Thursday, according to a source familiar with the contract. The Met got significantly better on Thursday evening, also re-signing center fielder Brandon Nimmo to a monster eight-year, $162 million deal. The 2022 season with the Philadelphia Phillies was his first full year since having Tommy John surgery in 2021. The 37-year-old veteran reliever with 157 career saves had a combined 2.40 ERA (3.58 FIP), a 1.16 WHIP, 20 saves and 81 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings for the Phillies and Chicago Cubs. Edwin Diaz is cemented in the Mets' closer role, but Robertson will be a strong setup option with plenty of high-leverage experience. He will have plenty of value in holds leagues.

Mon Oct 17 202217:48David Robertson Testing His Calf Monday
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher David Robertson (calf) will test his strained right calf with a throwing session on Monday. His status for the National League Championship Series against the San Diego Padres remains unclear, but if he comes out of the session without any setbacks, he could be added to the NLCS roster on Tuesday before Game 1 of the series. The 37-year-old right-handed veteran wasn't available in the NL Division Series against the Atlanta Braves due to a calf injury he injured while celebrating a Bryce Harper home run in the Wild-Card Series. Robertson was one of the team's best relievers during the regular season, so getting him back for the NLCS would be huge for the Phillies bullpen.

Sat Oct 15 202211:46David Robertson Continues To Throw
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher David Robertson (calf) continues to throw and believes he is close to pitching again. Robertson would be a nice boost to the team's bullpen if they advance past the Atlanta Braves in the National League Division Series to play in the NL Championship Series next week. The 37-year-old veteran reliever strained his right calf celebrating a Bryce Harper home run in the Wild-Card Series and wasn't able to make the roster or the NLDS this week. Already with a pretty solid bullpen, Philadelphia would get a boost if Robertson is healthy enough to pitch next week. He had a 2.40 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 20 saves and 81 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings during the regular season.

Tue Oct 11 202211:08David Robertson Off NLDS Roster Due To Injury
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher David Robertson (calf) strained his calf jumping when outfielder Bryce Harper hit a home run in Game 2 of the National League Wild-Card Series on Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Robertson received a platelet-rich plasma injection and was left off the roster for the NL Division Series this week against the Atlanta Braves. It's a notable loss for the Phillies for this series, as Robertson was solid for the Phillies in a high-leverage role in the regular season, posting a 2.40 ERA (3.58 FIP), a 1.16 WHIP, 20 saves and 81 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings with the Phillies and Chicago Cubs. Zach Eflin will continue to serve as the team's primary closer against the Braves this week.

Wed Sep 14 202200:42David Robertson Notches 20th Save Of Season Tuesday
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher David Robertson picked up his 20th save of the season in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Marlins. The veteran came in to shut things out with a one-run lead and did just that, delivering a 1-2-3 ninth inning with no strikeouts. Robertson has had a resurgent season with the Cubs and Phillies, converting 20 of 27 save opportunities with a 2.34 ERA, an 11.71 K/9 rate, and a 4.37 BB/9 rate. The walks have been an issue, but Robertson has been a solid source of saves for fantasy managers so far this season and should continue to be down the stretch.

Wed Sep 7 202211:47David Robertson Picks Up A Win Tuesday
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher David Robertson was credited with the win on Tuesday in the 3-2 victory over the Miami Marlins. It was his fourth win of the season. Robertson tossed a scoreless ninth frame while allowing one hit, walking two and striking out one. It wasn't the most pristine outing for the 37-year-old veteran, but he'll take the win regardless. He is now 4-2 on the year with a 2.51 ERA (4.09 FIP), a 1.33 WHIP, four saves and 18 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings pitched since joining the Phillies at the Aug. 2 trade deadline. Robertson has been solid in relief for Philadelphia, but he hasn't had a save since Aug. 24.

Wed Aug 24 202223:08David Robertson Notches Save No. 18 On Wednesday
Philadelphia Phillies pitcher David Robertson allowed a walk while striking out one over a scoreless inning to earn the save during Wednesday's 7-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds. He entered Wednesday's contest in the ninth inning to protect a two-run lead. The 37-year-old needed 19 pitches to secure his 18th save of the season. He has now recorded a save in two of his last three appearances. The veteran right-hander owns a 2.16 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and a 63:23 K: BB across 50 innings in 2022. Robertson is the Phillies' primary closer, while Seranthony Dominguez (triceps) is on the injured list and should continue to see the bulk of Philadelphia's save opportunities.

Sun Aug 21 202212:37David Robertson Won't Be Sole Closer
Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson said he will continue to mix and match in the later innings after the team placed right-hander Seranthony Dominguez (triceps) on the injured list on Sunday. Thomson listed Connor Brogdon, Jose Alvarado, Brad Hand, David Robertson and Andrew Bellatti as options to close with Dominguez sidelined for at least the next 15 days. It's not the greatest situation for fantasy managers that are speculating on saves in Philadelphia moving forward, but although Robertson might not see every save chance, he still feels like the best bet. The 37-year-old is the most experienced closing option and recorded a two-inning save on Saturday in the second game of the doubleheader against the New York Mets.

Sun Aug 21 202200:29David Robertson Gets Six-Out Save
Philadelphia Phillies reliever David Robertson got the final six outs in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday, closing out his club's 4-1 win over the Mets. The veteran needed 36 pitches to get through the two frames since he allowed a pair of walks and one hit, but he also picked up a pair of strikeouts as well in the outing. With Seranthony Dominguez awaiting imaging results after experiencing sore triceps Saturday morning, Robertson could receive plenty more save opportunities down the stretch run for the contending Phillies. He's already picked up 17 saves between Philadelphia and Chicago, while also sporting a superb 1.86 ERA and 1.01 WHIP through 48 1/3 IP so far this season.

Wed Aug 3 202218:28David Robertson Records Save On Wednesday
Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher David Robertson was asked to take the ball in the ninth inning on Wednesday. The veteran right-hander was acquired by the Phillies through a trade with the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. Manager Rob Thompson mentioned that Robertson might not get save chances right away in Philly. Well, that was not the case as Robertson came out for the save during Wednesday's contest. He struck out two batters and earned himself his 15th save of the season. The expectation is that Robertson will continue to get save chances in Philly going forward.

Tue Aug 2 202215:58Phillies Acquire David Robertson From Cubs
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired right-handed reliever David Robertson from the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, according to sources. It's unclear who the Phillies will send to the Cubs in return, but Robertson will be returning to the Phil after spending the 2019 season with them. The 37-year-old was the Cubbies closer before the trade, posting a strong 2.23 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 14 saves and 51 strikeouts in his 40 1/3 innings of work. In Philadelphia, Seranthony Dominguez and lefty Brad Hand have been sharing closing duties, but it remains to be seen if Robertson will be given the majority of save chances in his new home or if he'll be part of an ongoing committee for saves. His fantasy outlook for the rest of the season could receive a boost on a contending team.

According to an article from Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated's Fan Nation, the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets reportedly "have had ongoing discussions about a potential trade package for catcher Willson Contreras and relief pitcher David Robertson that would see New York send multiple top prospects to Chicago." Contreras has, so far, enjoyed a strong season at the plate, batting .258 with a .374 on-base percentage, 14 home runs, and three stolen bases in 353 plate appearances. Meanwhile, Robertson has pitched to a 1.83 ERA, a 3.25 FIP, 50 strikeouts, 19 walks, and 14 saves in 39.1 innings spanning 35 appearances for the Cubs.

Thu Jun 23 202217:49David Robertson Suffers Third Blown Save
Chicago Cubs relief pitcher David Robertson suffered his third blown save of the season during Thursday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The veteran right-hander gave up a solo home run in the eighth inning to the tie the game at 7-7. Robertson hasn't been given many save chances lately, but could be on the move soon. The Cubs aren't competitive and are likely to trade Robertson before the trade deadline. He has a 2.03 ERA this season, so fantasy managers should continue to lean on him. Hopefully, Robertson will get traded to a more competitive team soon.

Wed Jun 1 202200:39David Robertson Earns Seventh Save Of Season Tuesday
Chicago Cubs closer David Robertson picked up his seventh save of the season in Tuesday's 8-7 win over the Brewers. The veteran came on to pitch the ninth inning up by a run and delivered a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout. Robertson has had a throwback season to this point, converting seven of nine save opportunities with a 1.96 ERA, 24 strikeouts, and nine walks over 18 1/3 innings pitched. The Cubs may not have a ton of save opportunities over the course of the season but Robertson seems to have the closer's role, making him worth a fantasy roster spot in roto leagues at least.

Sun May 29 202218:49David Robertson Blows Second Save
Chicago Cubs relief pitcher David Robertson suffered his second blown save of the season on Sunday. The veteran right-hander allowed the game-tying run in the ninth inning on a wild pitch that certainly should've been caught. Despite that, Robertson was tagged with the earned run and his second blown save of the season. Fantasy managers shouldn't be discouraged by this and should continue to trust Robertson.

Chicago Cubs relief pitcher David Robertson has been activated from the COVID-19 list on Wednesday. The veteran right-hander is expected to resume his role as the closer on the North Side. He has posted a 1.50 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 17/2 K/BB ratio across 12 appearances this season. Righty Rowan Wick did a solid job filling in, but is expected to move back into the setup role with Robertson returning.
