LHP CC Sabathia came off the disabled list to pitch against the Red Sox for the third time this season Saturday. And, after contemplating retirement after injuring his right knee in Toronto Aug. 8, he outpitched Chris Sale. He worked six innings, yielding two runs on four hits while throwing 80 pitches. He had thrown 18 straight scoreless innings this season against Boston before the Red Sox scored twice in the fifth - after Sabathia had notched his third strikeout, which allowed him to pass Mickey Lolich and become the American League's all-time K leader among lefties. He is 7-0 with a 1.46 ERA in eight starts after Yankee losses this season. "I know that he was pretty emotional that night because he thought he was heading for surgery," said New York manager Joe Girardi. "We said, 'Let's just see.' If you would have listened to the tone in his voice, you probably wouldn't have guessed that (he'd be back)."

LHP CC Sabathia (right knee) left his start Tuesday after three innings with a sore knee. He allowed a pair of two-run homers to 3B Josh Donaldson in his second shortest outing of the season. He went 2 2/3 innings against the Blue Jays on July 4 at Yankee Stadium. "I thought he had a little bit of a limp coming off the field," manager Joe Girardi said. "He's actually going to go home (Wednesday) and see the doctor. It's not what you want but it's what happened. When he came off he said he was feeling it every pitch and that's why I pulled him." Sabathia had a five-game winning streak on the road end. It is the fourth time this season that he has gone four innings or fewer in a start, three of them against Toronto. "It was just the same feeling I get whenever my knee hurts," Sabathia said. "Just a pain. It's just frustrating. It's been healthy all year. To go out today and not have it be where I want it to be is just frustrating. It's kind of out of nowhere. I can't really point to one thing and say that's what it was. Right now, I just want to pitch, I just want to get out there and be healthy and pitch. It's just hard to land. It's hard for me to finish my pitches. It's just hard for me to get over my front side and finish the pitches. When I can't do that, I don't know where the ball is going."

LHP CC Sabathia made his 500th career start but it was a disappointing night as he allowed four runs and six hits in six innings in a loss to the Tigers. Sabathia (9-4) said he struggled with command of his slider and changeup. Sabathia gave up multiple homers in a start for the first time since April 28 vs. Baltimore. Of the last six pitchers to make their 500th start, four did it with the Yankees. It was last done by LHP Andy Pettitte on June 3, 2013 vs. Cleveland.

LHP CC Sabathia became the 20th player to get at least 2,800 strikeouts when he capped an 11-pitch at-bat with 2B Tim Beckham by striking him out. Sabathia lasted only 4 1/3 innings because, after striking out Beckham, he allowed the next three hitters to reach ahead of Evan Longoria, who singled and homered off him. Sabathia was charged with four runs when RHP Chad Green allowed a two-run double to PH Brad Miller.

Sabathia has now earned victories in six of his last eight starts. The former AL Cy Young Award winner also kept the Red Sox scoreless in a win June 7, pitching eight scoreless with five hits, no walks and five strikeouts.

He allowed five hits and did not issue a walk.

LHP CC Sabathia confirmed Monday afternoon that he would be activated from the disabled list Tuesday after missing three weeks with a strained left hamstring. He will start the second game of the series against the Blue Jays. Sabathia was very encouraged it only took three weeks for the injury to heal. He is returning after throwing only a 35-pitch bullpen session June 25 and a three-inning simulated game last Thursday in Chicago. Sabathia is 16-9 with a 3.47 ERA in 28 career starts against Toronto. He last faced the Blue Jays in Toronto on June 1 and gave up one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings of a 12-2 win.

LHP CC Sabathia (strained left hamstring) threw a full bullpen session consisting of 35 pitches Sunday and reported no problems. Sabathia has missed two starts since getting injured June 14 and the next step could be a simulated game.
