RHP Bronson Arroyo took a positive step forward in his comeback on Tuesday when he pitched five solid innings against the Baltimore Orioles. Arroyo (1-2), who needed a positive start after two rough outings to mark his return to the Reds, allowed three runs in five innings. "I'm encouraged by tonight," Arroyo said. "I felt a little crisper with the sinker and the breaking ball. I'm still getting a little winded." Arroyo, 40, kept the Orioles off-balance by changing speeds but allowing them to put the ball in play which he believed was his best chance to be successful given a recent drop in velocity. "I have to be Houdini, after being out of the game for two and a half years."

RHP Bronson Arroyo made his first start at Great American Ball Park since 2013, but it was a rough homecoming as the veteran allowed five runs and seven hits in six innings. Arroyo rejoined the Reds in spring training after not pitching for nearly two full seasons due to elbow and shoulder surgeries. It's taking some time for him to get up to speed, especially after a limited spring training. "I feel like I have less room for error," Arroyo said. "I feel like I don't have enough to finish guys. My (velocity) obviously isn't as good as it used to be. I can get into counts to keep guys off the bases with walks; but, if I keep giving up big innings like I did the last two times out, it is going to be hard to keep the team in the game."

RHP Bronson Arroyo missed his spots at times and paid the price with a loss in his first major league game since June 15, 2014. Arroyo gave up six hits and six runs in four innings, walking three and striking out three. Never a pitcher who won with raw power, Arroyo didn't exceed 86 mph on the radar gun, and made two bad pitches to Aledmys Diaz that resulted in a solo homer and a three-run blast. His next start could be Thursday night against Milwaukee.
