Wed Aug 1 201812:29Nationals jettison Kelley after his outburst on mound
WASHINGTON (AP) — Shawn Kelley's outburst on the mound got him booted from the Washington Nationals. The Nationals designated Kelley for assignment on Wednesday, a day after he threw his glove to the ground and glared into the dugout while working the ninth inning of a 25-4 blowout of the New York Mets.Kelley entered the game with Washington leading 25-1. He appeared agitated and was working quickly, and he had already allowed a run when the plate umpire warned him to slow down. After the warning, he gave up a two-run homer to Jeff McNeil, prompting the outburst."I thought (the way) he acted, portrayed on the field last night, was disrespectful to the name on the front of the jersey, the organization, specifically (manager) Davey Martinez," Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said. "You're either in or you're in the way. I thought he was in the way. That's something you don't come back from. It was a disrespectful act. ... I thought it warranted him leaving the team. I couldn't see how... [More]

NEW YORK (AP) — Left fielder Brett Gardner threw out Matt Olson at the plate with the help of a replay reversal, and the New York Yankees beat the Oakland Athletics 7-6 Saturday on Neil Walker's run-scoring single in the 11th inning.Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman walked three straight batters around a wild pitch starting the ninth. Tue Mar 27 201819:00Zimmerman sits out yet again in Nats' last exhibition game
WASHINGTON (AP) — Ryan Zimmerman fielded his position in a drizzle before the Washington Nationals' last exhibition game. Then he joined teammates for batting practice. Even took some trips around the basepaths, expending enough energy in the chill to redden his face. And then, when it was time for what became reigning NL East champion Washington's 3-1 loss against the Minnesota Twins to begin Tuesday, Zimmerman did what he so often did during spring training this year: He sat out.Taking an unusual approach to February and March, Zimmerman hit on back fields and faced pitchers destined for the minor leagues instead of playing in Grapefruit League games. He finished with two official at-bats. The 33-year-old first baseman insists he's healthy, insists he's ready for the regular season and insists — as does Nationals manager Dave Martinez — that he will play on opening day."I practiced. I did BP every day with the team. It's not like I was sitting in the clubhouse watching TV. I did all the... [More]

Sun Feb 25 201817:09Nats ace Scherzer loose, healthy following 1st spring start
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Max Scherzer joked about the home run he surrendered — a sure sign that while baseball is back on the diamond, it's still early in spring training.Dansby Swanson sent a fastball from Scherzer over the left field wall, keeping it inside the foul pole for the lone blemish against the Washington ace in a 9-3 win over Atlanta on Sunday. In the clubhouse not long afterward, teammate Shawn Kelley pointed his phone at the ultra-competitive Scherzer, mimicking reporters with their voice recorders. Kelley playfully barbed his teammate, asking what went wrong on the homer."That's great," Scherzer said, laughing. "Get them out of the way."In his first outing of the spring, Scherzer quickly dispatched six of the seven batters he faced, striking out three of them.He sped through two innings, needing only 23 pitches, 17 of them strikes."For a first outing, you really have no adrenaline in a spring start for your first one out," Scherzer said. "I was able to at least put a... [More]
