OF Ezequiel Carrera is making the most of his chance to play left field and bat leadoff in the absence of LF Michael Saunders, who is resting a sore hamstring. Carrera was 2-for-4 with a home run and a walk Sunday in a 6-3 win over the Oakland Athletics. Carrera had a career-best four hits in the game Saturday and is 7-for-14 (.500) in the three games he has played in Saunders' place starting Friday. The home run was his first since July 26, 2015 at Seattle. Manager John Gibbons said that Carrera has earned another start Monday in the opener of a three-game against the Chicago White Sox.

The Blue Jays sent Aaron Loup and Drew Hutchison down -- they don't need a fifth starter until Aug. 29 -- and added some depth pieces in Carrera and infielder Matt Hague. Carrera was designated for assignment and outrighted earlier this month after posting a .279/.327/.374 batting line, three homers, and 21 RBI in 70 games with the big club.

Carerra cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo on Monday, Brendan Kennedy of the Toronto Star reports.

Unlike Danny Valencia, who was claimed by the A's, Carrera was able to clear through waivers and made it to Triple-A Buffalo. He was having a good year for the Blue Jays, hitting for a .279/.327/.374 slash line in 70 games, but with the acquisition of Ben Revere, became surplus to the team's requirements. Without any options remaining, it will be tough for Carrera to make it back to Toronto without a series of injuries.

Carrera was designated for assignment by Toronto on Saturday, Barry Davis of Sportsnet Blue Jays reports.

Carrera has shown a decent enough bat in the outfield to think he should be able to find another home. In 164 plate appearances, Carrera hit .279/.327/.374 with all three components of the slash line at career highs. Teams needing a left-handed bench bat could take a flier on him.

Carrera went 2-for-3 with a run scored in Wednesday's victory over the Phillies.

With Jose Bautista playing designated hitter as he recovered from a leg cramp on Tuesday, Carrera got a start in right field and made the most of his opportunity. After a shaky start to July where he went 2-for-29, he's 5-for-10 with four runs scored in the last seven days and has boosted his average up to .262.

After hitting one home run in his first 64 games of the season, that's now back-to-back games for the 28-year-old. In the crowded Blue Jays outfield, Carrera will continue to fight for at-bats, but is typically used as a late-inning replacement rather than a full-time starter.

Carrera played the hero Saturday, smacking a two-run pinch-hit home run off Fernando Rodney in the eighth inning of an 8-6 win over the Mariners.

The Jays offense is doing so well right now, even the slap hitters are going yard. Carrera is mainly a defensive replacement and pinch-runner for the team, hitting just .248/.299/.331 since joining the major league roster, and the homer was just his second of the season, so don't expect a repeat performance any time soon.

Carrera came in as a pinch runner and went 0-for-1 in Wednesday's loss to the A's.

Carrera has just two hits since June 26 and has watched his batting average plunge from above .300 to .244. The 28-year-old left fielder will struggle to find at-bats in the crowded Blue Jays outfield and of late, hasn't done much to deserve a spot either.

Carrera went 2-for-4 with his first home run of the season and three RBI in Sunday's loss to the Orioles.

While only seeing limited at bats, Carrera has been more than serviceable, hitting for a .295/.351/.386 slash line in 88 at bats across 43 games. While he doesn't have the same kind of platoon value that Danny Valencia does, he's established himself as a solid contributor who doesn't need a ton of playing time to make an impact.
