Sun Jun 16 201922:32Padres edge Rockies in another slugfest at Coors Field
DENVER (AP) — The Padres and Rockies set a modern-era record by combining for 92 runs in a four-game series, with San Diego pitcher Matt Strahm drawing a pinch-hit, bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning to rally past Colorado 14-13 Sunday. It was just another wacky day at Coors Field, especially in this split series where the Rockies outscored the Padres 48-44 while the teams combined for 131 hits. Colorado's Charlie Blackmon became the first player since at least 1900 with 15 hits in a four-game series, according to STATS. Adding to the zaniness: the finale was delayed once to clean up a big puddle in foul territory despite sunny skies, and again later because of weather.Trailing 13-10 in the ninth, Wil Myers had an RBI single and Greg Garcia promptly tied it with a two-out, two-run triple off closer Wade Davis (1-2). The Rockies brought in starter Jon Gray, who intentionally walked two batters to face Strahm. Gray fell behind 3-1 before throwing a strike. Taking all the way, Strahm watched... [More]

Mon Jun 3 201902:35Challenges and pitfalls of baseball's draft
The top draft class of the past two decades is now a mere footnote in baseball history. Its players began scattering almost immediately, and many fans probably have no idea that they were all once drafted by the same team. Plus, that team doesn't even exist anymore. In 2000, the Montreal Expos selected Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore, Jason Bay and Russell Martin. In hindsight, it was a group that could have potentially altered the franchise's fortunes. In reality, it was another missed opportunity for baseball in Quebec.None of those four standouts ever played a game for the Expos."It's kind of just something that we have to live with," said Jim Fleming, who was the Expos' scouting director in 2000 and later went to the Marlins. "Sometimes we didn't get to keep them."A common cliche about baseball is that it's a game of failure because the best only get hits 30% of the time. Now imagine being a scouting director when the draft rolls around. Hundreds of players are chosen, but only a small number... [More]

Mon Apr 1 201904:06Tatis, Jimenez in the big leagues from the start
Opening day was particularly special for Fernando Tatis Jr. and Eloy Jimenez. In large part because they weren't stuck at El Paso and Charlotte. It's common for baseball's top prospects to spend a bit of time in the minors at the beginning of the season, but the Padres and White Sox put Tatis and Jimenez on the roster this year, and they made their big league debuts Thursday. Tatis, a shortstop, had two hits in San Diego's win over San Francisco . Jimenez, an outfielder, had a run and an RBI in Chicago's loss to Kansas City .Jimenez hit .355 in 55 games at Triple-A Charlotte last year, and shortly before the start of this season, he signed a $43 million, six-year contract — a record high for a player under club control who hadn't yet appeared in a major league game.So it was no surprise to see Jimenez in the majors right away. Tatis' situation was different. Delaying a player's service time for a few weeks can delay potential free agency down the road, and Tatis hadn't played above Double-A.... [More]
