Kevin Siegrist (forearm, shoulder) walked two but threw two-thirds of a scoreless inning in his first rehab appearance with Double-A Springfield.
It's not clear how many appearances Siegrist will need before being activated, but he was seem to have a good shot to return immediately after the All-Star break. With Sam Freeman almost surely set to stick around, the Cardinals figure to go with three lefties in the bullpen.

Kevin Siegrist (forearm, shoulder) threw a bullpen session Wednesday and said he's ready for a rehab assignment.
"I feel good," Siegrist said. "I'm ready. This has been no fun." The session was Siegrist's third pain-free session. He's been on the disabled list since May 24, so he still may not be ready for activation immediately after the All-Star break, but assuming things go well he shouldn't be out for too much longer.

The left-hander noted that he "feels better every time I throw." Siegrist landed on the DL in May with a left forearm strain, but it's a nerve issue in his shoulder that's been the bigger issue of late. While there remains no timetable for his return, progress is definitely being made.

Kevin Siegrist said Monday that his left forearm is "still sore, but getting better."
Siegrist originally felt tightness in his forearm/wrist area during an appearance on May 18, and he was placed on the DL after still feeling in his next game on May 23. Test have ruled out structural damage, and he's been prescribed rest and rehab. He'll be eligible to return on June 8, but it's unclear whether he'll be ready at that time.

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said Saturday that early scans on Kevin Siegrist's forearm have been encouraging.
Siegrist was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday afternoon with what's being labeled a forearm strain. The injury is more toward the wrist than the elbow, and the belief is that the young left-handed reliever will be able to avoid surgery. Siegrist, 24, owns a 1.51 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and 77 strikeouts in 59 2/3 major league innings.

The hard-throwing southpaw should get caught up quickly and is in line to open the 2014 regular season as a setup man in the St. Louis 'pen. He posted an outstanding 0.45 ERA and struck out 50 batters last summer in his first 39 2/3 major league innings.

The young left-hander will provide some needed depth for the Cardinals' battered bullpen. Siegrist, 23, has posted a promising 1.95 ERA and 44/10 K/BB ratio this season in 27 2/3 minor league innings. He was a 41st-round pick in the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft.
