Boston Red Sox utility infielder Josh Rutledge will start the season on the disabled list after straining his left hamstring in a Grapefruit League game on Tuesday night.Red Sox manager John Farrell said Wednesday that Rutledge will "require some time" off to recover and would likely open the season on the 10-day DL, according to the Providence Journal.Rutledge, 27, emerged this spring as a candidate to play some first and third base against lefties. He hit .265 with three RBIs in 28 games for the Red Sox last season.First baseman Mitch Moreland was a late scratch from the lineup on Wednesday due to the flu. Farrell said Moreland was sent home and will be quarantined for three days.The Sox are hoping Moreland will be ready for Opening Day on Monday against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Fenway Park.

INF Josh Rutledge was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to replace 3B Pablo Sandoval on the roster. Sandoval was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of a shoulder injury.

Rutledge went 2-for-3 with an RBI in Wednesday's 3-0 victory over the White Sox.

Rutledge has now reached base safely in six straight games, and Wednesday's contest marked his second consecutive multi-hit outing. Although he has been prone to strikeouts, the 26-year-old has been productive overall for the BoSox since a July 27 trade from the Angels, and is hitting an impressive .364 (12-for-33) with one homer and four RBI in August.

Rutledge started a third straight game Saturday, filling in for Brock Holt (oblique). He went 1-for-3 in a loss to Kansas City.

With Holt unavailable and talk of Dustin Pedroia's hamstring injury pushing out his return until mid-September at the earliest, Rutledge is the best option at second base for interim manager Torey Lovullo. If Holt's injury lingers, the Red Sox may choose to call up Deven Marrero from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Rutledge started at second base Sunday and went 0-for-2 with an RBI in a loss to the Mariners.

With Pablo Sandoval (elbow) unavailable, Brock Holt moved to third base and Rutledge took Holt's spot at second base. Rutledge will stick around on the roster because the Red Sox need his versatility while Holt fills in at second base for the injured Dustin Pedroia (hamstring).

Rutledge entered Friday night's game when Pablo Sandoval was removed due to a thumb injury. He went 0-for-1 in his only at-bat.

The injury to Sandoval does not appear to be serious -- just some swelling -- but it may keep him out of the lineup for a day or two, giving some at-bats to Rutledge.

Rutledge started at third base Friday night in place of the injured Pablo Sandoval (forearm). He went 1-for-4 with a strikeout in Boston's win over Tampa Bay.

Sandoval's dealing with a deep bone bruise on his forearm, the result of getting hit by a pitch in Thursday night's win over Chicago. Rutledge, who's taken over the role of utility infielder while Brock Holt fills in at second base for the injured Dustin Pedroia, will continue to fill in as long as Sandoval is out.

Rutledge has been called up from Triple-A Pawtucket, Sean McAdam of CSNNE reports.

Rutledge was acquired in the Shane Victorino deal on Monday, and he'll come up to take the spot of Jemile Weeks, who was DFA'd Wednesday. Rutledge figures to serve as a backup infielder, capable of playing second, third and shortstop.

Red Sox GM Ben Cherington said following Rutledge's acquisition Monday that he expects the infielder to join the big-league team, Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports.

Cherington didn't specify when Rutledge would be added to the major-league roster, but given that Dustin Pedroia (hamstring) is on the DL and Brock Holt is day-to-day with a knee injury, the Red Sox could be motivated to address their infield immediately. Unless Holt eventually joins Pedroia on the DL, Rutledge likely wouldn't have a regular path to at-bats, though his ability to play second base, third base, and shortstop would make him a useful asset off the bench.

Rutledge has been traded to the Red Sox for Shane Victorino, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.

The Red Sox are also sending cash to the Angels as part of the deal. Rutledge appears to be another utility infield option for Boston, and he'll likely head to Triple-A Pawtucket to begin his time as a member of the Red Sox organization.

Rutledge was sent to Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Rutledge played his way to the minor leagues, as he was widely expected to be the Opening Day second baseman coming into camp, but finished the Cactus League with with just 10 hits in 54 at-bats, leaving the door open for Johnny Giavotella to take the spot. There is a chance that Rutledge may get another shot if Giavotella, who has just 465 plate appearances in four years at the major league level, struggles, but the Angels will likely give him some room to breathe after posting a .910 OPS in 25 games during spring training.

Rutledge (hamstring) returned to the lineup in Sunday's Cactus League game against the Giants, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout.

Rutledge's spring struggles continued Sunday, as he is now carrying a .506 OPS with nine strikeouts in 34 at-bats. Rutledge was considered the favorite to be the Angels' starting second baseman in 2015, but If Johnny Giavotella can continue to produce in the final two weeks of camp, he may emerge as the clear favorite.

Rutledge has missed the last three days due to tightness in his hamstring, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.

This is the first we've heard of the injury, but manager Mike Scioscia said he does not expect Rutledge to be sidelined long, as he is slated to return Sunday. Rutledge has struggled this spring after coming into camp as the top candidate for the everyday second baseman's job, tallying just a .552 OPS in 32 at-bats.

Rutledge did not get an at-bat in Friday's Cactus League outing against the Indians.

Johnny Giavotella received the start in his stead, going 2-for-5 with a double, a triple, and three runs scored. Rutledge was likely the odds on favorite to win the job of everyday second baseman entering camp, but he has really struggled this spring, tallying just one extra-base hit in 31 at-bats while striking out eight times.

Rutledge got the start at second base in the Cactus League opener against the Brewers on Thursday, going 1-for-2 with an RBI single in the contest.

Rutledge got the first chance at what is set to be a four-man audition at the keystone to replace Howie Kendrick. While the fact that he got first dibs doesn't necessarily mean he has a leg up on the competition, it is worth noting that Rutledge has the most experience of all the candidates, and could provide some power in what is traditionally a light-hitting position, as he carries a career ISO of .144.
