Rutledge will compete for the Angels' starting job at second base this spring, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The competition figures to include Grant Green, Johnny Giavotella, and Tayloer Featherston. Eventually, Roberto Baldoquin could be an option, but he'll be in minor league camp this spring and is expected to open the year at High-A. Rutledge has shown a variety of offensive tools in parts of three seasons with the Rockies, but he hasn't been able to offer power and speed in the same season after doing as much in his first taste of the big leagues with Colorado in 2012.

Rutledge was traded to the Angels late Wednesday in exchange for reliever Jairo Diaz, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.
Though he once seemed headed for a long-term starting role for the Rockies after a strong MLB debut in 2012, Rutledge failed to convince the team he was a viable middle infield option last season when he served as the primary replacement for the injured Troy Tulowitzki, batting .269 with four homers and two stolen bases across 342 plate appearances. With the Angels sending Howie Kendrick to the Dodgers in a separate deal Wednesday, it looks like Rutledge could be the leading candidate at the moment to take over second base duties with his new club. However, it wouldn't be surprising if the Angels brought in a more proven commodity in the spring to challenge Rutledge for the starting role, given his meager big league track record.
Mon Sep 29 201409:43Rutledge 3-4 with RBI and run scored in Sunday's loss to Dodgers
Rutledge went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in Sunday's loss to the Dodgers.
After going 1-for-12 over the first five games of the Rockies' season-ending road trip, Rutledge ended on a high note, riding the three-hit performance to a .269/.323/.405 batting line for the season. With Troy Tulowitzki (hip) slated to return to the shortstop spot in 2015, Rutledge will more than likely have to compete for a starting job at second base against DJ LeMahieu for the third straight spring.

Rutledge is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Dodgers.
Rutledge will get the night off after starting the last 13 games at shortstop. Christhian Adames will get the start at shortstop in Rutledge's place.

Rutledge went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Saturday's win over the Diamondbacks.
Rutledge isn't quite slugging at the level he showcased during his impressive MLB debut in the second half of 2012, but it appears he's nonetheless reestablished himself as part of the Rockies' long-term plans. While Troy Tulowitzki (hip) is set to return to shortstop next spring, Rutledge, who is slashing .270/.317/.412 over 317 plate appearances, should be given every opportunity to beat out the light-hitting DJ LeMahieu at second base.

Rutledge went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's 16-2 romp over the Dodgers.
Rutledge isn't showing the burst of power or speed that he demonstrated last season with the Rockies, but he has been hitting with far more consistency in 2014. He'll have a lockdown on the starting shortstop job for the rest of the season, but with Troy Tulowitzki (hip) expected back for the start of spring training, his status heading into 2015 is on shaky ground.
Fri Sep 12 201417:14Rutledge out of lineup Friday against Cardinals
Rutledge is out of the lineup Friday against the Cardinals.
Rutledge will sit Friday in favor of Rafael Ynoa, who will bat seventh for the Rockies. While Rutledge figures to see a majority of the starts in September, the team will also likely want to get a look at Ynoa, who could be a candidate for the roster in 2014.
Sun Sep 7 201413:53Rutledge out of lineup Sunday against Padres
Rutledge is out of the lineup Sunday against the Padres, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.
Rutledge has made five straight starts, but will be relieved by Rafael Ynoa at shortstop Sunday afternoon. The 25-year-old is off to a solid start of September, collecting eight hits over his first five games of the month.

Rutledge went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI in Wednesday's 9-2 win over the Giants.
Rutledge tripled for the second straight game, giving him an impressive six over just 241 at-bats this season. He should be a fixture in the No. 2 spot in the lineup the rest of the way, with Troy Tulowitzki (hip) out for the season.

Rutledge went 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored in Monday's 10-9 win over the Giants.
A return to Coors Field was exactly the antidote Rutledge needed to put a 1-for-18 skid over the last six games behind him. The Rockies added infielder Rafael Ynoa to their roster Monday and still have Charlie Culberson around to push for starts at shortstop, but unless he falls prey to another prolonged slump, Rutledge will man the position most nights for the rest of the season.
Sun Aug 31 201414:43Rudledge out of lineup Sunday against Diamondbacks
Rudledge is out of the lineup Sunday against the Diamondbacks.
Rutledge is just 1-for-18 over the past six games, and will take a day off Sunday to get his head right for September. Charlie Culberson gets the start at shortstop in his place and will bat seventh for the Rockies.
Thu Aug 28 201413:39Rutledge out of lineup Thursday against Giants
Rutledge is out of the lineup Thursday against the Giants.
Charlie Culberson will spell Rutledge at shortstop in the finale against San Francisco, following an 0-for-11 showing from Rutledge in the first three games of the series. Rutledge's average has fallen more than 50 points since the end of July, but he should continue to see most of the time at the position with Troy Tulowitzki (thigh) out for the year.
Thu Aug 21 201412:51Rutledge 1-4 with stolen base in Wednesday's win over Royals
Rutledge went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Wednesday's win over the Royals.
After spending three consecutive games on the bench last week, Rutledge has since returned to the starting lineup for four straight games. His reentry to the lineup has been successful thus far with a 5-for-16 showing at the plate to go with two stolen bases. For now, it looks like he'll be able to ward off Charlie Culberson for regular duties at shortstop.
Thu Aug 14 201417:23Rutledge out of lineup for Thursday's game against Reds
Rutledge is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Reds.
Rutledge received a clearer path to playing time the rest of the season with the news Wednesday that Troy Tulowitzki (hip) wouldn't play again in 2014, but his recent offensive struggles could end up costing him his starting job anyway. Rutledge has only five hits in 41 August at-bats, potentially loosening his hold on regular duties if backup Charlie Culberson -- who will fill in for him Thursday -- gets hot at the dish.

With Troy Tulowitzki (hip) out for the rest of the regular season, Rutledge figures to remain the Rockies' regular shortstop moving forward.
Rutledge has been the Rockies' primary shortstop since Tulowitzki was sidelined in late July, and he is the top option to remain in that role through the rest of this season. Rutledge posted an .839 OPS in July but has gone just 5-for-41 (.122) this month, so he could lose some starts to Charlie Culberson if he is unable to get back on track with his bat.
Sun Aug 10 201414:02Rutledge out of lineup Sunday
Rutledge is out of the lineup Sunday vs. the Diamondbacks, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.
With Rutledge starting each of the last eight games in the field for the Rockies, it seems likely that he's just receiving a rest Sunday. Rutledge is in the midst of a 1-for-15 slump at the plate over his last four starts and could surely benefit from the day off.
Fri Aug 1 201416:26Rutledge (illness) back in Rockies' lineup Friday against Tigers
Rutledge (illness) is back in the Rockies' lineup Friday against the Tigers, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.
After missing four starts with an upper respiratory infection, Rutledge will step back in at short to take on right-hander Justin Verlander. Rutledge still has about a two-week window to see regular starts at the position, with Troy Tulowitzki (thigh) not expected back until the middle of August.
Thu Jul 31 201413:42Josh Rutledge: Scratched Thursday
Rutledge (illness) has been scratched from Thursday's lineup.
Rutledge was initially penciled in to return from his three-game absence but Charlie Culberson is now set to start at short. A reason was not immediately provided by the team, but the upper respiratory infection is presumably still causing issues for Rutledge. Consider him day-to-day.
Thu Jul 31 201412:34Josh Rutledge: (Illness) Back In The Lineup Thursday
Rutledge (illness) is back in the Rockies' lineup, manning short and batting seventh, Thursday against the Cubs, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
After missing the first three games of the Cubs series with an upper respiratory infection, Rutledge will slot back into the lineup to face right-hander Jake Arrieta in Thursday's finale. Rutledge is batting a healthy .307/.358/.486 with three homers in 55 games with the big club this season, and he should continue to see regular time at short while Troy Tulowitzki (thigh) remains out.
Wed Jul 30 201417:54Josh Rutledge: Remains Out Wednesday
Rutledge (illness) remains out of the Rockies' lineup Wednesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Rutledge will miss a third straight start as a result of an upper respiratory infection, and his status for Thursday's series finale is uncertain. Charlie Culberson will make another start at shortstop in his absence.
