RHP Junichi Tazawa was placed on the disabled list Wednesday due to ribcage inflammation. Tazawa, who was given a two-year, $12 million contract prior to this season as a Marlins free agent, has been highly ineffective. He has a 6.60 ERA in 16 appearances.

RHP Junichi Tazawa was a bit of a bright spot in an otherwise bad game for the Marlins on Friday against the Pirates. That lowered his ERA to 5.87. The Marlins are hoping that can be the start of something better for Tazawa, who has been one of the most durable relievers in the game the past few years. From 2012 to 2016, Tazawa made 293 appearances, tied for eighth among AL relievers.

RHP Junichi Tazawa gave up a solo homer on Saturday to Mets SS Asdrubal Cabrera. Tazawa has a 7.20 ERA this season, which is not what the Marlins expected after signing him to a two-year, $12 million contract this past offseason. Tazawa has allowed three homers in five innings for Miami.

RHP Junichi Tazawa, probably overworked in the first half, was relegated to less-important situations late in the season. Before the All-Star break, he was 1-1 with a 3.62 ERA. After the break, he went 2-1 with a 5.19 ERA. Tazawa wound up with a career-high 4.17 ERA, and his 53 appearances and the 49 2/3 innings were his lowest totals over the past four years.

RHP Junichi Tazawa (right shoulder impingement) threw 25 pitches in a bullpen session without difficultly and could return next week. Tazawa became the third Red Sox pitcher to go on the disabled list in the last week when the Boston placed him on the DL on Thursday. The move is retroactive to July 4, the day after his last outing. Tazawa has a 3.62 ERA in 35 outings this season but has posted a 7.11 mark in his last 14 outings.

RHP Junichi Tazawa (shoulder tightness) is day to day and won't play pitch until after the All-Star break but isn't expected to land on the disabled list. "He's going through some treatment," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "They haven't indicated there's the need for a MRI at this point." Tazawa last pitched Sunday and is 1-1 with a 3.62 ERA in 35 appearances.
Tue Sep 15 201523:55Tazawa shut down for rest of 2015 due to workload concerns
Tazawa has been shut down for the rest of 2015 due to workload concerns, the Boston Globe's Pete Abraham reports.
Tazawa sits at 58.2 innings on the season, which is less than he has thrown in each of the two previous seasons, but his performance of late does suggest that he is wearing down. The 29-year-old righty proved pretty convincingly that he is not cut out to handle the ninth inning after Koji Uehara went down, so he will be locked into mid-to-late inning complimentary role in the bullpen next season.

Tazawa, who allowed four runs in a third of an inning Friday night, attributed his poor outing to "missed location of my fastball," ESPN Boston reports.
If his poor outing is the result of a mechanical issue, that can be fixed. If it's something more, say, fatigue brought on by a heavy workload over the past three years, then that's a different matter for Boston. Since the start of the 2013 season, Tazawa has made 215 appearances (including the 2013 playoffs). Since Aug. 1, he's allowed 14 runs on 24 hits in 13.2 innings.

Tazawa was torched for four runs on four hits while recording just one out in the eighth inning of an 8-4 loss to Tampa Bay on Friday night.
Brought on to protect a 4-3 lead, Tazawa wasn't fooling anyone, and continues to struggle mightily since the Red Sox lost closer Koji Uehara for the season. He was initially named to take over for Uehara, but ineffectiveness made that a short term scenario, and he hasn't fared much better since returning to his usual set-up role.

Tazawa worked around two hits in a scoreless eighth inning against the Yankees on Monday for his 16th hold.
Apparently, the hip ailment he's suffering from isn't serious enough to keep Tazawa off the field for the last-place Red Sox. Tazawa certainly didn't look overpowering in this one, but considering that Jean Machi looked horrendous in the ninth, this could continue to be a fluid closing situation.
Sun Aug 30 201514:06Tazawa (hip) removed from Red Sox's closer role
Tazawa (hip) has been removed from the Red Sox's closer role, CSN New England reports.
Tazawa's last appearance came in extra innings Friday, allowing four walks and a hit before injuring his hip and exiting. Jean Machi will take over the closer duties from him moving forward, while he will move into a setup role for the Red Sox.
Sun Aug 30 201512:06Junichi Tazawa: (Hip) Gets Removed From Closer's Role
Boston Red Sox pitcher Junichi Tazawa was removed from the closer role Sunday in favor of Jean Machi, according to CSN New England.
Boston Red Sox pitcher Junichi Tazawa was removed from the closer role Sunday in favor of Jean Machi, according to CSN New England. Tazawa was given the first chance at taking over the role when Koji Uehara suffered a season-ending wrist injury earlier this month, but he has allowed five runs in just 2.2 innings over the last week, prompting the team to turn to Machi, who retired the New York Mets in order Sunday to record his first save of the season. "We're going to bump him back into the eighth-inning role," interim manager Torey Lovullo told ESPN about Tazawa. "There's a number of reasons for that. I think he just excelled in that role. He was so good in that role and we're going to get him back in that situation for right now." Tazawa injured his hip in his last outing against the Mets on Friday, but there has been no indication that he will miss time as a result of the injury.

Tazawa is dealing with a sore right hip and groin after twisting awkwardly to field a come-backer Friday night, the Boston Globe reports. He's expected to be able to pitch Sunday.
Jean Machi served as Boston's closer in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Mets. Even without the discomfort in Tazawa's hip/groin, he may not have pitched Saturday after throwing 30 pitches Friday night.

Tazawa picked up a hold by being pulled from a save opportunity after he allowed a run on one hit and four walks while recording just two outs.
Tazawa was awful - throwing just 11 of 28 pitches for strikes and giving up a run to cut the Red Sox' lead to two before Craig Breslow came in to finish off the the win. He has been erratic for the past couple of months, and that has been magnified since he was named closer following Koji Uehara being declared out for the rest of the season. Tonight he is the closer, and since Jean Machi and Alexi Ogando have also struggled, he may be in the morning as well, but there are no guarantees. Looking for a darkhorse candidate for saves? Perhaps you can consider Heath Hembree who has considerable experience as a closer in the minors. His career has been clouded by command issues, but he could hardly be worse than what they have been getting.
