RHP Tommy Kahnle was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte after the Sunday game following a four-day stay in the majors. He pitched one scoreless inning in his lone outing for Chicago.

RHP Tommy Kahnle was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday, four days after being sent down. He threw one scoreless inning at Baltimore on April 29 in his lone major league appearance of the season. He was 1-0 with one save and a 2.45 ERA in nine outings for Charlotte.

RHP Tommy Kahnle was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday when RHP David Robertson was reinstated from the bereavement list. Kahnle threw a scoreless inning Friday against the Orioles. At Charlotte, Kahnle has a 3.00 ERA and 12/3 strikeout/walk ratio over nine innings. He was acquired from Colorado in exchange for RHP Yency Almonte on Nov. 24, 2015.

Kahnle was still credited with his 10th hold of the season after inducing a double play before Christian Friedrich retired the final batter of the seventh inning on a strikeout, but it was hardly a steady performance for the former closer. Now back in a setup role, Kahnle won't offer much fantasy value thanks to a bloated 4.86 ERA and 1.77 WHIP.

Kahnle will return to setup duty with John Axford renamed to the closer role Tuesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

The 26-year-old Kahnle blew a save opportunity Saturday, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk, which came just two days after another three-run blowup. It seems he lost manager Walt Weiss' trust, as Weiss has opted to turn back to Axford in the ninth inning just a few weeks after he blew four straight save chances.

He now has five runs allowed over his last two appearances and he needs to pitch better if he wants to remain a closer.

Kahnle served up a three-run homer to Juan Lagares while working in a non-save situation during Thursday's loss to the Mets.

The Rockies' newly anointed closer converted both of his first two save chances since taking over the ninth-inning duties, so he likely won't be impacted by Thursday's blemish. Kahnle has been one of the few serviceable members of a terrible bullpen this season, supplying a 3.38 ERA and striking out 37 batters over 29.1 innings.

This was Khanle's first save since being named the Rockies' closer on Friday. The righty hasn't allowed an earned run since July 18.

He probably hasn't scribed his name in stone just yet, but the strong performance here might have moved him to the front of the line for future save chances.

In the Rockies' five games since John Axford was dropped from the closer's role, Kahnle has been used only once, recording the final four outs in last Saturday's 6-2 win over the Cardinals.

At first glance, the lack of usage might seem to indicate that manager Walt Weiss has a lack of confidence in Kahnle, but the opposite might actually be true. With the Rockies trailing in the ninth inning and ultimately losing the other four games during this stretch, the fact that Kahnle wasn't used suggests that Weiss prefers to preserve the right-hander for higher-leverage or save situations. Meanwhile, the other two relievers that Weiss mentioned along with Kahnle as potential closing candidates, Justin Miller and Rafael Betancourt, have been used three times apiece in middle-relief or mop-up scenarios. There won't be clarification on who's closing in Colorado until a save chance arises, but all signs seem to point to Kahnle getting the first crack at the gig.

Rafael Betancourt and Justin Miller were also mentioned as options by manager Walt Weiss. Kahnle has experience closing in the minors -- he saved 15 games for the Yankees' Double-A Trenton affiliate in 2013 -- but his history of control issues (4.5 BB/9) may prevent him from separating from the other two candidates.

Kahnle picked up his eighth save of the season after recording the final out of the seventh inning in Monday's win over the Rangers.

Kahnle entered the game with two outs and Prince Fielder on first base, ultimately allowing the inherited runner to score after giving up an Adrian Beltre double. He would extinguish the threat by inducing a Josh Hamilton groundout, giving the Rockies a one-run lead heading into the final two innings. Kahnle has been one of the Rockies' most productive setup men since receiving the promotion from Triple-A Albuquerque on June 1, delivering a 3.66 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 25:12 K:BB ratio over 19.2 innings.

Kahnle tossed two scoreless innings and struck out three batters in Wednesday's loss to the Astros.

Kahnle failed to break camp with the big club out of spring training despite a mostly solid 2014 campaign, but he's sparkled in relief since joining the Rockies at the beginning of June. Through eight appearances covering 8.2 innings, Kahnle has only allowed one run, though the six walks he's surrendered could portend some trouble down the road.

The Rockies recalled Kahnle from Triple-A Albuquerque on Monday, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.

Kahnle had been pitching well in Triple-A, posting a 3.68 ERA in 17 appearances; and with Jordan Lyles headed to the disabled list, Kahnle will be called up to add another arm to the Rockies' bullpen. He last pitched in the majors in 2014, when he posted a 4.19 ERA across 68 innings while carrying a 63:31 K:BB ratio.

The move comes as somewhat of a surprise, but the 25-year-old should have the opportunity to work his way back onto the parent club at some point this season.
