Simmons underwent Tommy John surgery in February, so the start of spring training and the regular season will come just after a year since going under the knife. The 25-year-old has yet to ramp up baseball activities, and the club will need to see how he feels once he does, so this appears to just be an initial timetable.

This was merely a procedural move to free up a spot on the 40-man roster, with Simmons set to miss the entire 2015 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last week. Jason Grilli and Jim Johnson seem like the top candidates for the setup role with Simmons out of the equation, but non-roster invitee Jose Veras could push for a late-inning role as well.

This comes as devastating news for the 24-year-old Simmons and the Braves, who figured to rely on the right-hander as a key piece at the back end of the bullpen this season. Simmons was shut down in August due to recurring soreness in his shoulder, but he said less than three weeks ago that he had not experienced any discomfort since he began his preseason throwing exercises. In 26 appearances with the big club in 2014, spanning 21.2 innings, Simmons posted a 2.91 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 23:11 K:BB.
