Mon Feb 26 201812:19Red Sox, J.D. Martinez finalize $110M contract
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — J.D. Martinez is finally a member of the Boston Red Sox.The five-year, $110 million contract that Martinez agreed to with the club a week ago was finalized on Monday, when he was introduced at a long-awaited news conference at JetBlue Park. After hitting 45 home runs in 119 combined games last season for the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks, Martinez became the most prominent free agent position player and was widely linked to the Red Sox throughout the winter on the slow-moving market."I love this game," Martinez said. "I love to play, and to play in front of fans who are just as passionate and love it just as much, it's exciting."The Red Sox took extra time with the medical evaluation, with particular attention paid to a right foot injury that Martinez suffered last year. That led to some language changes to protect the Red Sox over the life of the deal, and the 30-year-old Martinez even flew back to Boston at one point last week for further examination. He was deemed fully healthy for 2018, however, and will bat third or fourth in new manager Alex Cora's lineup."It's a great fit, obviously," Cora said. "We've got another great athlete on our ballclub."Martinez's on-base-plus-slugging percentage of 1.066 ranked third in the major leagues last season, one reason why he was able to avoid becoming overly restless over the nearly four months of waiting to join a new team. Since the start of the 2014 season, Martinez's .574 slugging percentage is the second-best in the major leagues, behind only Mike Trout (.579) of the Los Angeles Angels."I trust my talent. I know what I can do and what I bring to the table, and that just helped me relax a little bit more," said Martinez, who will likely be the primary designated hitter with All-Star Mookie Betts entrenched in right field.Martinez can opt out of the deal after two years, three years and four years, agent Scott Boras said. He said the process of negotiating with Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski was not adversarial, but rather respectful."We all wanted to execute an agreement that we all thought was in the best interest of J.D. and the Red Sox. Dave and I have known each other for a long time and we've gotten to know each other a lot better over the last five days, and that says a lot," Boras said.___For more AP baseball coverage: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball
