Free-agent right-hander Michael Tonkin agreed to a one-year, $1 million major-league deal with the New York Mets on Tuesday, according to a source. Tonkin was nothing spectacular in 2023, but it was his return to the majors for the first time in six seasons. The 34-year-old veteran pitched for the Atlanta Braves and had a 4.28 ERA (4.43 FIP) and 1.09 WHIP with 23 walks and 75 strikeouts in 80 innings pitched over 45 relief appearances. Tonkin isn't going to be on the fantasy radar whatsoever and will most likely start the 2024 season providing long relief for the Mets' bullpen. In six major-league seasons (five with the Minnesota Twins), Tonkin has a 4.37 ERA (4.52 FIP) and 1.31 WHIP in 226 1/3 relief innings.

RHP Michael Tonkin was recalled from Triple-A Rochester by the Minnesota Twins. Tonkin is back for a second stint with Minnesota this season after making the opening -day roster and posting a 10.64 ERA in nine appearances covering 11 total innings. He went 4-2 with a 1.73 ERA in 31 appearances for Rochester.

RHP Michael Tonkin was sent outright to Triple-A Rochester after being designated for assignment on May 6. In nine appearances this season, the right-hander went 0-1 with a 6.55 ERA. He allowed eight earned runs on 14 hits and 10 walks with 13 strikeouts in 11 innings with the Twins this season.

Tonkin was optioned to Triple-A Rochester on Saturday, LaVelle E. Neal III of the Star Tribune reports.

He was optioned down to make way for Tommy Milone, who will start Sunday after spending time on the DL with a flexor strain. Tonkin's most recent appearance in the majors was brief, pitching 0.2 innings in Friday's game against the Indians. He gave up one run on two hits and didn't look entirely comfortable on the mound. That being said, he did manage to compile a pleasant 1.29 ERA in 35 innings at Triple-A Rochester and could be one of a handful of Twins' relievers in prime position for a September call-up.

Tonkin will return from Rochester for the first time since June, taking the roster spot of Blaine Boyer, who was placed on the DL Friday with elbow inflammation. At Triple-A, Tonkin holds a tidy 1.29 ERA while limiting batters to just a .168 average. He also boasts a 41:5 K:BB in 35 total innings.

Tonkin allowed a grand slam to Dexter Fowler in his last outing, raising his ERA from 4.50 to 5.73. Although only two of those runs were earned, it was still the fourth home run Tonkin his allowed in 11 innings of work this season. The Twins have the day off Thursday and will wait until Friday to make a corresponding roster move.

Tonkin was recalled, Tyler Mason of Fox Sports North reports.

Tonkin has made 12 appearances so far this season with the Twins in multiple stints with the team. He has a 5.63 ERA in eight innings with seven strikeouts. Tim Stauffer was designated for assignment after allowing a 6.60 ERA in 13 appearances with Minnesota.

Tonkin was optioned back to Triple-A Rochester on Thursday.

He served as the 26th man for Wednesday's doubleheader and will be sent down prior to Thursday's game. Look for Tonkin to continue to provide organizational bullpen depth.

Tonkin will likely be sent down after the game, but he could stay on the roster if Ricky Nolasco goes on the DL with a sore ankle.

Tonkin gave up two home runs in seven innings that led to a 5.14 ERA in his short stint with the Twins since he was called up in late April. He had a 7: K:BB ratio, so his strikeout ability should get him back to the majors at some point this summer.

With Casey Fien leaving Wednesday's game with right shoulder soreness and likely heading to the disabled list, Tonkin seems poised to get another chance in the Minnesota bullpen.

Tonkin thrived at Triple-A last year with a 2.80 ERA and 9.2 K/9 and has a mid-90s fastball that is sorely needed in the Minnesota bullpen. However, he's no lock to make the bullpen this spring and he's had an up-and-down performance in the majors. Still, there's not a clear cut successor to Glen Perkins at closer should he get hurt, so Tonkin could figure into that mix.

Tonkin will be recalled from Triple-A Rochester prior to the Twins' game Tuesday against the White Sox, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger reports.

Tonkin will offer the Twins a hard-throwing, right-handed option in relief in September, though the team may understandably shy away from using him in crucial spots. He floundered in his 15 appearances with the big club earlier this season, giving up eight runs on 15 hits and six walks over 12.1 innings.
